Surprised it took this long, actually. Better move going animated than trying live action again.

It’ll suck cuz Illumination sucks.

At the very least it should be a lock to become the highest grossing video game adaptation ever.

I mean it's worth trying. But am I crazy or would be Mario Kart or Super Smash Bros movie be an easier sell than a regular Mario one? Super Smash Bros might lose the toddlers a little bit, but I think everyone above 10 would be more interested in its adaptation than Mario saving Peach from Bowser. You couldn't have Mario fight Luigi but you could make some characters like Captain Falcon bad guys along with Bowser, Gandondorf, etc. Too anime? Japan would pop for it. Mario Kart could have good guy characters racing against each other for fun I guess.

Also if this works out I wouldn't mind a Banjo Kazooie movie. It would basically be Shrek and Donkey

Could Pokemon work as a Jungle Book/Beauty and the Beast type of live action/CGI hybrid? I guess the difference is the pre-existing story isn't there. But there is huge franchise upside and worst case scenario you get that international money.

The Nintendo brand should have went for animated movies a long time ago. A straight-forward Mario movie could easily work.

This also makes me wish we'd get a Zelda movie someday. Doesn't have to be a hard PG-13, but something close to LOTR.

If I was Amazon I would've rather gone all in on Zelda adaptation than LOTR prequel, honestly

Zelda could be the answer sorely needed for the slacking fantasy genre (in films) right by striking that long lost 80s fantasy vibe the genre needs now

It will make good dough but I don't see it can survive multiple movies. Even Lego movies have started going down and I think it will continue that downward trend and this won't be as big as Lego movie.

The link will be pretty worthless unless you can read Japanese, but Nintendo confirmed this today:

https://www.nintendo.co.jp/corporate/re ... 80201.html

One thing of note: Google translate seems to think the agreement is for "movies" (plural) featuring Mario, which could either mean sequels or spin-offs (ala Mario Kart?) if the translation is accurate.

Super Smash Cinematic Universe would be dope.

It's singular since there aren't plural nouns in Japanese, and nouns aren't assigned articles like "the/a". A noun in Japanese can be translated as plural in English, so you have to understand the context to determine which it really means. In this case, for example, "movie" can be "more than one movie", or "a movie in general", or "the movies", etc., in English.

There are a few cases where saying/writing a noun twice in Japanese does make it plural (think person/people), but few fall into this category, and movie isn't one of them.

Or... could just say movies if successful, movie if a failure.

I'd check it out.

I still watch the live action once in a while. It's one of the most bizarre movie adaptations ever created. Honestly anyone in film class should write their thesis on it. It's like Mario mixed with bladerunner, and absolutely nothing works.

If Miyamoto is behind this, it'll be a masterpiece

I’d like to see a Mario live action film set in the ACTUAL mushroom kingdom replete with photorealistic koopas and goombas. You can’t tell me that won’t work! It would be unlike anything seen before and I think it would see massive success.

Mario feels like another 80s IP that has stayed super relevant and will appeal to the masses.

Given the live action film didn't pan out in the 90s think there's a big audience here that wants a good Mario movie. Given how popular and cross demo appeal the franchise has seems this could be a mega franchise in the making of another 80s originating IP. $400M?

Yes $400m is certainly a shot. It is still super relevant even more so than Sonic plus so the numbers should speak for themselves.

I still preferred the Christmas slot (though perhaps not against Avatar and Shazam)

If it's any good it will DOUBLE Sonic 2's 392m worldwide box office. More people love Mario than Sonic.

Yes so $800m worldwide, $400m domestic is a good chance.
