Post What will be the best wide release(s) of the summer?
May has been a shit hole for mainstream films, with only Guardians receiving a generally good (but not great) reception. Which films this summer will prevent it from becoming another 2016?

Wonder Woman I'm thinking will be good, but not truly great.
Spider-Man will probably be a pretty par for the course Marvel film.
Transformers will be shit.
The Mummy will be shit.
Cars 3 won't be as bad as Cars 2 but it won't be great either.
Despicable Me 3 seems like it will go the Shrek 3 rather than the Toy Story 3 route.
The Dark Tower doesn't look like it will be anything special.
Lower tier animated films like Captain Underpants and Emoji will probably be shit.

It seems the only film's with potential to be better than average are Wonder Woman, Apes, Dunkirk and maybe Valerian. Then again, the only above average films from last summer were Civil War and Dory, so if just two of those are great, plus Guardians, it will be better than 2016.

Everyone is expecting The Mummy to be shit. I think will surprise. And I have a good feeling about Emoji.

Easy - Dunkirk

And depending on how many theaters Amazon puts it in: The Big Sick

I'll be pleasantly shocked if Valerian scores anything above a 35% on RT.

It should on paper anyway. We'll see.

Luc Besson has made good movies before.

Sure, but he is mostly associated with rotten scores, and by the same logic, Michael Bay has also made good films before. ;)

Why are people so down on The Mummy? Cruise (or his agent) usually have good taste.

Because for the most part KJ has bad taste.

I have already declared my allegiance to Team Valerian on WOKJ for the past several months.

So "best" = highest RT score?

Imho, their aggregate scoring system is particularly unreliable when it comes to wide release movies. Wide releases are designed to be acceptable to the widest common denominator - every mediocre positive review counts as fresh. If a movie gets a 3/5 rating from 100% of reviewers, is it really the "best" movie?

It Comes At Night, Baby Driver, Atomic Blonde, and The Glass Castle.

No, but I assumed this thread is about RT scores. When zwackerm mentioned "reception", part of that is reviews, so RT is good enough for that.

Zwacky, can you change the thread title if this is what you meant?

Given that Baby Driver is already at 100% with 22 reviews I don't think any other wide release will do any better.

Yes please because my answer is what I'm expecting to like the most of the wide releases.

Dunkirk actually got very close, it's at 93% now, but Baby Driver is still higher with 95%.
Would like to note though that Dunkirk has a rotten average rating of 8.7, while Baby Driver scores an 8.1 there.

Dunkirk is personally winning this for me so far by a mile anyway, but I still gotta see Baby Driver though.

I was wrong about It Comes At Night, at least for myself. But Baby Driver and Atomic Blonde are good calls so far. Both are my top 2 of the year atm. Then next weekend The Glass Castle is out which hopefully won't disappoint.
