Movie Tavern
So the nearest theater to my school is a Movie Tavern, which I'd always been curious about trying. For anyone who doesn't know, it's a movie theater that serves bar type food items during the movie. I'd been skeptical this could work without distracting from the movie and from my experience today I was right. They start seating and taking orders a half hour before trailers, so by the time the movie started, the food had all been ordered. It also wasn't too distracting when they brought the food. The distracting part was when the server tried to talk to us during the movie. I'm sure he was told to do so by his boss, but why would I want to talk about the food while the movie was playing. Lego Batman is such a detailed movie that even being distracted by talk for one minute you've missed a dozen jokes and references. And the food was good, but not great. I think for the movie tavern to work, they would need to find a way to not talk to the guests and make food that is on par with a real restaurant.

Re: Movie Tavern
Why can't ordering be done on a pull-out tablet or from your phone?

Re: Movie Tavern
Most of these places still take orders by waiter/waitress. The ones I've been too usually try to be as discreet as possible during the film.
Once we went with work and no expense was sparred regarding food and alcohol. I felt sick afterwards as we were lazing around in recliners while eating. Not good. Next step was to have a half naked woman in a toga feeding me grapes - it was that decadent.

There's a place like this in Holland which used to be my go-to cinema as a teenager. Quite liked it. The way it worked, you press a button on the counter in front of you and it summons the waiter to make an order. If you don't press the button they won't bother you.

Re: Movie Tavern
The Alamo Drafthouse in Brooklyn which just opened a few months ago is great about this. You're supposed to get there a half hour before and have your order taken during a pre-show that's themed to the movie you're seeing (it's usually hilarious). Then your food is usually brought out without distraction and if you want anything during the film you have a notepad you can jot the item you want to order down on that they discreetly come and grab. They drop off your bill 30 minutes before and aside from the very beginning there's very little interaction between the server and the guests. It helps that they have a zero tolerance policy for talking and phones.
I love that theater - it's always a fun experience. I saw Fantastic Beasts there which had an awesome pre-show and Split, which I hated but was still a good time because of the atmosphere.

I'm not a fan. Just eat dinner before. You'll get better food and can afford to pay your rent by avoiding the theater food.
