Quote:
Aladdin is about to enter a whole new world: Guy Ritchie is in talks to direct a live-action adaptation of the 1992 animated classic being produced by The Lego Movie’s Dan Lin with a script by Big Fish scribe John August, EW has confirmed.

This is the latest addition to a long list of Disney animated movies getting live-action remakes and spinoffs. Beauty and the Beast, starring Emma Watson and Dan Stevens, arrives in 2017, and the studio is currently at work on Cruella, Tink, The Lion King, and Mulan. It was also revealed last year that Disney is developing a live-action prequel to Aladdin titled Genies.

The original Aladdin, which notably featured Robin Williams as the genie, grossed $217.4 million domestically and $504.1 million worldwide, making it that year’s top-grossing film.

I wonder how Disney will approach the live-action adaptation of Home on the Range.

First they need to get through the controversy when Ritchie casts, say, Nicholas Hoult or Kodi Smit-McPhee as Aladdin.

He'll probably cast the guy from Slumdog Millionaire or Life of Pi.

The obvious choice is probably Riz Ahmed. He will have had a lot of exposure by then thanks to Rogue One, Jason Bourne and "The Night Of". Priyanka Chopra should play Jasmine. Both are maybe 10 years too old, but they can look younger and that's the kind of casting that won't stir much controversy, yet have names and faces known to the public.

That's actually spot on. Riz could be great and Priyanka, while she's actually a terrible actress, is very, very watchable and has an undeniable screen presence.

I mean, Jasmine isn't a very good character. She's a little over the top. So Priyanka would be perfect!

I wouldn't be surprised to see Rami Malek getting cast as Aladdin.

I wonder how much this would gross in India, especially if they cast Priyanka who is like Angelina Jolie there I think. The Jungle Book did 39 mil

You know, I didn't think of him, but he seems like a good candidate too. Though even older than Riz Ahmed.

Priyanka actually did the voice of the snake instead of Scarlett Johansson in the Indian version of Jungle Book.

Will Smith is in talks to play the Genie.

And Riz Ahmed is definitely not someone I'd have in mind. He looks nothing like Aladdin should look.

It depends what film it's going to be and the story they want to tell, but a good actor will outweigh him making look a certain way I'd say. I'd love for them to whitewash this.

"Black Cauldron" done live action would probably be an improvement.

Will Smith, lol. It's perfect really though. Anyone that criticises the decision can just be dismissed with "you racist". Disney knows this is clever.

Yea, they're not touching white actors in this. The machine Disney is too smart

I am not sure on Guy Ritchie doing any good to Aladdin specially if its musical. I mean its going to make loads of money no doubt but I would rather prefer to have a good movie as well.

In retrospect Dev Patel was the obvious choice for this. But looks like they want an unknown

Mena Massoud cast as Aladdin and Naomi Scott of Power Rangers fame as Jasmine. And Will Smith confirmed as the genie.

Naomi Scott's looks were the only good thing about Power Rangers.

Will Smith as the genie is a mistake.

Aladdin and Jasmine have European face shapes in the cartoon. They are just brown with black hair. They don't really look that Arab at all.

Come on Jason Statham as Aladdin and RDJ as Jafar, and of course CGI Genie using Robin Williams outtakes and alternate takes.
