Why'd you watch the second and third Paranormal Activity films but not the first?

Actually, I watched Paranormal Activity in late September, before I came up with this idea to do 31 Days of Horror. Not only is it fresh in my memory from that viewing, it was probably the 6th or 7th time I've seen it now.

Also, I had seen 1-4, but hadn't seen The Marked Ones or The Ghost Dimension. I watched The Marked Ones last night and hope to do Ghost Dimension today and start the Insidious movies too (seen and love the first, but haven't seen Chapter 2 or 3).

Ecks, what did you think of Hausu?

Hausu was way more trippy and bizarre than I anticipated, and honestly, I really enjoyed it. It's one of the titles this month that I actually want to watch again soon just to see things I might have missed on my first viewing. And I usually love films that look and feel like a dream, and that's how Hausu was for me.

I get what Lecter is saying, but honestly the jump scares still get me, especially in the earlier ones. And there's something genuinely creepy, specifically about 1 and 3 that lingers. I'm disappointed that the atmosphere of 1 and 3 (and 2, kind of) is pretty much gone in 4 and beyond.

Hooray! I hope you enjoyed it. Although it's not jump-scare horror, Kwaidan haunts me still.

Kwaidan was great. I'm a fan of anthology films (and series), and also a fan of Tales from the Crypt, which is what these stories felt like, especially the endings. My favorite was the second story, which to my understanding, was excised from the film for its US debut? Can't understand why, unless it was too scary for the time.

Of course the movie predates the Crypt series, and the original Crypt comics predate the movie, and the original stories upon which Kwaidan is based predates the comics.

For anthology films check Dead of Night (1945). Some of the stories are rather more comedic in nature, but the Ventriloquist's Dummy is the real standout.

Two other Japanese horror (ghost) movies from the 60s to check out: Onibaba and Kuroneko.

Post Re: 31 Days of Horror
I'm watching Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension right now. Man, it may sound silly to criticize the jump scares when that's kind of what the franchise is built on, but weren't the jump scares more organic in the first three? Those three films, while far from perfect, were built on tension, creepy atmosphere and allowing us to use our imaginations on occasion. I even don't hate PA4. The Marked Ones is far from perfect, but I admire the decision to shake up the franchise a bit with that one. Yet, The Ghost Dimension is failing on every single level. I can't believe anyone who watched and enjoyed the ultra-low budget first film actually would help make this one. They forget every single thing that worked in the first five.

My biggest criticism about the entire franchise remains the atrocious dialogue though. I know they tried going for realism with it, but every time someone talks in a casual way (especially when first encountering a camera in their face), they come across worse than porn actors.

Unfortunately, I'm going to be away Friday through midday Sunday, so that's going to cut down on my watching unless I can sneak in a movie here or there. Next I want to tackle the three Insidious flicks and get through at least the first three Halloween movies (only have seen the original plus Zombie's two), plus some of my personal favorites (The Descent, 28 Days Later, Shaun of the Dead).

If I didn't get to your suggestions, I'm sorry. I have them all written down and hopefully will get to them, even if it's past October. Thankfully, horror can be enjoyed year round.

I watched the Paranormal Activity films when I kind of didn't really know what to expect. At least the first two, anyway. I watched them almost one after another, and that really is the best way to view films.

Love Slither. It's been probably seven years since I watched it and I forgot how good it was.

I wish I could have watched them like that. It's just a matter of finding the 90 minutes to watch a movie. I hate starting and stopping a movie. But at least I finally watched them all.

So what will the final film be? Hopefully the original Halloween. Or you could ruin it all and watch Halloween III: Season of the Witch.

October 30: 28 Weeks Later (2007)
October 31: Halloween (1978) / The Evil Dead (1981) / Jeepers Creepers (2001) / Trick 'r Treat (2007)

I wrapped up my month of horror with two classics: Halloween and The Evil Dead. The Evil Dead I actually have only seen twice and the last time was a while ago. It's one of the few movies that genuinely creeps me out in spots. If it was played with the same humor of future installments in the franchise, the effectiveness would be lost, but it's so deadly serious and scary in spots.

Halloween is Halloween. It's a classic. I didn't get to watch the entire franchise like I planned, but I couldn't miss the original.

I loved Jeepers Creepers when it came out, but I'd say it's close to ten years since I last watched, and it didn't hold up quite as well as I would have liked. I'm in the camp that loves the first half and I'm just OK with the second half. But honestly, Salva does so well building fear and tension with so little in the first half, that once he dials it up, it's too much. However, I'm glad he went with the supernatural element. If he had kept The Creeper just a mysterious figure, it's just a carbon copy of Jason, Leatherface, etc. Making him something supernatural just works. I still haven't seen the sequel.

Trick 'r Treat is a new classic for me. So underrated, but deservedly found a cult following. It's just the perfect length for what they're going for. It's silly, it's funny, it's creepy. Love it and hope someday to get another one.

Thanks to everyone who followed along and read my updates throughout, and especially thanks for the suggestions. If I didn't get to all or any of yours, I do apologize. Life didn't allow me the chance to watch four a day like I did on Halloween Day, but I will keep all of the suggestions for future use.

Did they end up filming Jeepers Creepers 3 this year? They said the original girl is back and it takes place 23 years after the first. Ray Wise was suppose to be back as well.
