This has pretty much run away with the title of best reviewed film at Sundance so far: https://cannes-rurban.rhcloud.com/Sundance2017?t=1#1

The gayest film I've ever seen is Mrs Doubtfire.

Almost watched Carol but didn't. I'll probably watch Moonlight at some point.

Haven't you seen many musicals?

I've never seen the movie version of Rent. There are no gay characters in Chicago, Phantom, Hairspray, Les Mis, Sweeney Todd, Mamma Mia, or Into the Woods.

I was referring to cross dressing. I've also seen Miss Congeniality 2.

When you watch mostly family friendly films, gay characters are rare. Gobber in HTTYD is supposedly gay. I think my first exposure to gays in the media were Glee and Modern Family.

This is one of the funniest things I've ever read. No offense :P. Because cross-dressing makes it gay. Do you also think all gay people are cross-dressers? ;)

Anyway, musicals, regardless of having gay characters, are just considered a pretty gay thing. It's a stereotype but the majority of straight guys don't generally dig musicals.

I'd recommend Brokeback Mountain though. It's a fairly heterosexual gay romance, if that makes sense. Like, I feel they're guys straight guys can relate to. And it has more heterosexual sex than gay sex as well as female nudity. Plus it's a fantastic film with some of my favorite cinematography.

This is true unfortunately. Though over 2/3 of the guys who did musicals at my school were straight.

I don't mind gayness in film, it's just that I only started really following film in 2012, and Carol, Moonlight and Blue is the Warmest Color are the only gay films I can think of since then.

I only brought up musicals because I know zwackerm is a fan, and most musicals have more gay things in them than fucking Mrs. Doubtfire.

I don't think that. The point was I don't think I've watched a movie with a gay protagonist, only gay side characters.

5 reviews on RT, all fresh. I know that's not many, but the average rating is a 10/10, which is pretty impressive. I'm hoping they announce a release date soon. There's pretty much no way it would come before summer and even summer seems unlikely as they'll probably want to release it during awards season. The benefit of releasing it in summer though is that these theaters are much less crowded with films for upscale adults and a film with such rave reviews could really stand out. Plus the summer setting makes this a perfect film for this time of year. But I'd hate it to hurt its chances at any award nominations so I don't really know what I want. Whatever will end up being best for the film I suppose even if I have to wait much longer to see it. At the very least I hope I don't have to wait too long for a trailer.

It would take a very strong-minded critic to give this film a negative review in the current climate. He or she would almost instantly be branded a homophobe and a Trump lover.

You can tell by the reviews and tweets that people genuinely love the film though. They certainly wouldn't have to give it such raves. They could get by on giving it a passing grade. Not all gay films are well-received. Not that long ago Stonewall was really trashed and even Freeheld with Julianne Moore got poor reviews. King Cobra recently got pretty mixed reviews. The ones that do get raves generally are great and deserving of them. It's not difficult to believe this is great. The book is a masterpiece and it sounds like the film is leaving people feeling exactly how the novel made me feel. The director's I Am Love and A Bigger Splash also got great reviews.

11 reviews on Rotten Tomatoes now. All overwhelmingly positive.

The final beats of Guadagnino's adaptation galvanize two hours of simmering uncertainty into a gut-wrenchingly wistful portrait of two people trying to find themselves before it's too late.
David Ehrlich, indieWire

Call Me By Your Name is a triumph of humanity.
Mike Ryan, Uproxx

It's not to be missed.
Sara Stewart, New York Post

A feat of accentuated sound design and arresting cinematography, luxuriating in the beauty of Italy.
Jordan Raup, The Film Stage

Based on André Aciman's 2007 novel, Luca Guadagnino directs a sexy, stunning film that will tunnel its way into your heart and live there.
Meredith Borders, Birth.Movies.Death.

'Call Me by Your Name' is a triumph in every regard
Adam Chitwood, Collider

First-summer-of-love movies are a dime a dozen, but Guadagnino's new variation on this well-trod genre pulses with beauty and insight, like some lost Eric Rohmer classic.
A.A. Dowd, AV Club

Love and intimacy between two male characters has never truly felt this real or emotionally heartbreaking.
Gregory Ellwood, The Playlist

:wub2:

I'm obsessed, and I absolutely apologize for my annoying obsession.

Quote:
Guadagnino’s film is almost certain to connect with a significant audience, and along with this year’s MOONLIGHT marks a significant step forward for a mainstream film embracing gay themes. Despite this, there’s a certain universality to the romance and while it may resonate more for a gay audience, it’s hard not to imagine anyone being significantly affected by this. I know I was, as it’s the rare film that casts a spell and a universe you can’t help but wish you could join.

The Berlin Film Festival has added this to their line-up. The festival is February 9-19th. I'm not sure when this will show during that time but I'm looking forward to having another batch of reviews come in.

18 reviews on RT now. All positive still.

Unforgettable on every level, the kind of film that has the power to move and inspire.

Top Critic

Drenched in sunlight, the movie is filled with warmth (and hotness), devoid of sappy melodrama but rich with honest emotion that transcends boundaries of sexual orientation.
Eric D. Snider, EricDSnider.com

A swirling wonder, a film about coming of age, about the secrets of youth, the magic of summer, the beauty of Italy.
Richard Lawson, Vanity Fair

An effortlessly beautiful ode to the loves destined to last a lifetime even when those we love are no longer in our lives.
Rob Hunter, Film School Rejects

Sony Pictures Classics has announced plans to release in the fall, not summer like was being speculated. Fall is definitely better for its awards prospects.

I finished reading the book for the second time at 6 AM. I will never be the same yet again. LOL. Everything annoys me right now. Just want to live in this book. I already feel like reading it over. Which is crazy. It's the first book I've even read twice. *sigh*

Never have I witnessed so much jizzing for a project as Mike jizzing for this. I'm surprised he read the book a second time with all pages being stuck together. ;)

I'm not sure zwackerm is as passionate for Moana, just infatuated in a crazy way. Plus, he has seen Moana. Mike hasn't seen Call Me By Your Name yet. With Mike, it's all pent-up desire that will just burst when he sits in the cinema. I feel sorry for the poor chap that has to wipe Mike's load off the screen.
