Quote:
After teaming up successfully -- critically and financially -- for Wolf of Wall Street, Leonardo DiCaprio and Jonah Hill are partnering again. This time, they will tell the true tale of Richard Jewell, the security guard who went from hero to suspect at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics.

Fox has picked up the rights to the Vanity Fair article The Ballad Of Richard Jewell, written by Marie Brenner, for the duo to star in.

DiCaprio will produce the adaptation with his partner Jennifer Davisson Killoran, along with Hill and Kevin Misher. Misher was the producer who initially optioned the material.

Jewell was working as a security guard at the Olympics when he discovered a backpack with pipe bombs. He helped clear the area; although the bomb did go off, killing one person and injuring dozens of others.

Initially hailed a hero, Jewell was soon the prime suspect, as the FBI searched his home twice. A media frenzy painted him as an overweight failed cop and mama’s boy and he became the punchline for late-night jokes.

After being raked over the coals by the media, Jewell was cleared, but the damage had been done. Lawsuits followed (against NBC and CNN, among several others) and the FBI and other government agencies were forced to make public apologies.

Jewell, who did work as a police office and a sheriff’s deputy, died in 2007 at the age of 44, due to health issues linked to his weight.

The project is in development, and the goal is for Hill to play Jewell and DiCaprio to play Jewell’s attorney.

The Wolf of Wall Street has grossed $103 million domestically and $226 million worldwide, while also nabbing five Oscar nominations, including ones for DiCaprio and Hill in acting categories.

I s'pose this is a big moment for Hill, even after his two "controversial" Oscar nominations. Lead role, true story, intense and topical subject, etc.

I'm actually sorta surprised it took them this long to make a movie about Richard Jewell. Poor guy.

Yeah, Atlanta was the key word here.

Sounds like it could be very good. I wonder how many people still think it was Jewell?

Not heard about this story. Should be good with Hill and Leo.

Thanks.

So I guess Jonah Hill will play Jewell.

Now that I know the story, I hope they don't try and make it a mystery drama. That would ruin it. They'll probably make it a deeply sympathetic and heartfelt story of Jewell being the American hero/victim. I hope it's not too sickly. I wonder who the director will be? and who will play Eric Robert Rudolph (another triple-named bomber/assassin; Lee Harvey Oswald etc.)? This could be an interesting project, and if released in November/December, I see more awards for Leo and Hill.

Yes sounds interesting. Jewel was all over the news for months back then.

Another 90s character to get a film, much like Belfort and Jon DuPont (Foxcatcher).
Next up the Unabomber, Lorena Bobbitt and David Coresh.

Btw - is the DiCaprio/Scorsese film still happening?

The story of the Waco siege calls out for a Paul Greengrass style docudrama. Other films have strongly motioned toward the iconography and inherent tensions, such as Kevin Smith's uneven Red State, but I do not believe any major motion picture has dived in headfirst, and it is such an intense piece of modern American history.

Yeah I'm frankly pretty shocked they never made a theatrical film about the Branch Davidians. Especially since the Waco siege's impact was even more pronounced since it was the main catalyst for the Oklahoma City bombings.

Nothing since a director signing on (guy who did the critically acclaimed OJ: Made in America) in November 2016. Hopefully it’s still in the cards.
