Gerard Butler may play Swayze role in Point Break remake

Quote:
After evolving from the long-planned sequel idea into a remake written by Salt’s Kurt Wimmer, the rebirth of cult actioner Point Break moved a step closer to reality last year with the hiring of The Fast And The Furious/Daredevil cinematographer Ericson Core to direct. Now Gerard Butler entering final negotiations for one of the main roles is another big leap forward.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Butler – who scored last year with Olympus Has Fallen and is set for sequel London Has Fallen – is signing up to take over Patrick Swayze’s iconic central part of Bodhi, zen leader of a crime ring responsible for several daring heists. While many of the plot elements will remain the same, including Bodhi’s bonding with an FBI agent named Johnny Utah who infiltrates his gang, the focus will be on new extreme sports in addition to surfing and sky diving as in the original. Keanu Reeves filled the Utah role in Katherine Bigelow’s 1991 film, but there's no word yet on who will take it on here.

I know the original will be a 24- or even 25-year-old film by the time this comes out, but, I don't know, it still feels so new. I imagine almost everyone who might be considered part of the core audience for a Gerard Butler action vehicle will be well aware of the Swayze/Reeves film and groan at the idea of "updating" it.
