He was supposed to have a scripted conversation about TV and big, bold images in movies.

He was introduced with some "Transformers" footage, walked on stage, and then began talking about how he creates worlds ... and then stopped. He sank into silence. He said something about not being able to see the monitor. Perhaps he was referring to the teleprompter.

And then he said "I'm sorry ..." and he walked off stage, leaving Samsung exec Joe Stinziano, EVP of Samsung America, to ad lib his way out of it.

Totally bizarre.

Stinziano was a pro: He tried to prompt Bay into ad libbing and just talking like a normal human being about how a curved TV might improve movies. But Bay wasn't having it. He just walked off.

We caught up with Bay following the show. He said he lost his place on the teleprompter.

This was Samsung's biggest marketing event of the (admittedly young) year. Not cool, Michael Bay!

He went out with the intention of reading something. When the teleprompter was off, it threw him off and he couldn't get back in the swing of things. It's normal.

Bay is a fool. He didn't intentionally fuck up his act at all. He inadvertently created more publicity for Samsung by being unprofessional. No wonder his career has relied on rehearsed content because he has no idea how to ad-lib.

I am not sure what is going on with him. I hope he levels out and hits the ground running again because I dig him. Honestly, it almost has a Joaquin Phoenix/I'm Still Here type feel, as if he and Daniel Clowes are secretly having a laugh as they orchestrate a shallow media controversy.
