1. Rope
2. Rear Window
3. North by Northwest

Rope is a monumental film in production and storytelling. I am gripped every time I watch it, and of course, it was filmed all in one shot (I've heard stories that it was actually filmed in a few shots, but still, that's impressive) to make it more reflective of the play it is based on. Changed from Oxford grads to Harvard grads and set in New York, Rope tells the story of Brandon and Phillip, who kill their classmate, David, and hide him in the chest that will serve as the table for their forthcoming party (guests which include David's auntie and fiancee). The film excels with its sharp dialogue and terrific acting ability of all involved. I especailly love James Stewart and John Dall here - just amazing to watch.

I've never been a fan of his most popular works Vertigo, Psycho and The Birds. In fact, I think the latter is one of the worst movies ever made. The other two are general fare. I liked The Man Who Knew Too Much but it's not as awesome as the Top Three. I want to watch more of his like The Wrong Man, Strangers on a Train, To Catch a Thief (started to watch it but never finished it), Dial M for Murder and Rebecca.

You may pick 3 from the poll.

It was filmed in 10 shots or so I think, but it was edited to make it look like a single continuous shot. It's pretty easy to see the cuts though, but nevertheless nicely done.

Yes, I've also read wikipedia.

How many shots are films nowadays made up of? Probably hundreds.

Plays have acts, so Rope still reflects a play. I admire this. Hitchock was a revolutionary.

Hitchcock wanted to shoot it all in one shot, but compromised based on the standard length of a roll of film at the time.

Further, he disguised the cuts at the end of the rolls:

Quote:
Every other segment ends by panning against or tracking into an object—a man's jacket blocking the entire screen, or the back of a piece of furniture, for example. In this way, Hitchcock effectively masked half the cuts in the film. However, at the end of 20 minutes (two magazines of film make one reel of film on the projector in the movie theater), the projectionist—when the film was shown in theaters—had to change reels. On these changeovers, Hitchcock cuts to a new camera setup, deliberately not disguising the cut.

My picks:

The Lady Vanishes (I've seen it more times than any other Hitchcock film - - it's a perfect little gem.)
Rear Window
Vertigo

rope was unintentionally hilarious in all the wrong ways. hitchcock is atrocious whenever he comes anywhere near philosophy.

I really need to see Rebecca. I hear that it doesn't actually feature Rebecca at all, which is awesome to name the film after her, especially in the 1940s.

You should definitely see Notorious. I suspect it would be an A or A- for you.

I am surprised of the popularity of Rear Window. Maybe it is because it is just so well known. I would say Vertigo and Psycho are much better films.

I would say the opposite. Psycho and Vertigo are the well known ones (and The Birds). Rear Window is the actual good one (it's also well known, but less so than Psycho and Vertigo).

Psycho is well known and was probably Hitchcock's biggest hit. It is still a classic. Vertigo, though, was a huge flop at the time and critically panned. Today critics call Vertigo his best film.
