Easy A is seriously one of the funniest movies ever. It would make my top 100 films. Mean Girls on the other hand would not. :P

31. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004, Michel Gondry)
Image

An affirmation of love and the necessity of experiencing heartbreak that comes along the way. One of the most romantic movies I've ever seen.

30. The Silence of the Lambs (1991, Jonathan Demme)
Image

A masterful depiction of horror. Chilling and emotionally taxing. Stunningly effective performances by Jodie Foster and Anthony Hopkins.

29. In Her Shoes (2005, Curtis Hanson)
Image

In my opinion, this is one of the (if not the) most underrated films ever. In Her Shoes understands what it means to have a sister and the complicated relationships that can entail.

28. E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial (1982, Steven Spielberg)
Image

When I was three years old, E.T. served as my first cinematic experience. It still blows me away each time I watch it. A magical tale of friendship and finding your place. Tears every time. Every time!

27. The Apartment (1960, Billy Wilder)
Image

"Shut up and deal." So much depth and humor lacking in most of the shallow romantic comedies made today. Jack Lemmon and Shirley MacLaine are in peak form. Timeless.

26. Pulp Fiction (1994, Quentin Tarantino)
Image

One of those movies that makes one realize why they love movies. One of the best screenplays ever written and a true cinematic milestone.

25. Titanic (1997, James Cameron)
Image

The best of both worlds: an incredible visual display with an emotionally resonant story. Even in this post-Avatar, post-Gravity landscape, Titanic's FX are still awe-inspiring. And yes, I was one of the legions of teenage girls who saw this in the theater a million times.

24. Edward Scissorhands (1990, Tim Burton)
Image

A beautifully simplistic, poignant fairy tale. It's brilliantly imaginative and Tim Burton's best movie.

23. Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb (1964, Stanley Kubrick)
Image

Arguably the best political satire of its kind. The film manages to be amazingly funny considering how dark (and relevant) the subject matter is. A master class in black comedy.

22. Inglourious Basterds (2009, Quentin Tarantino)
Image

Ends with the closing line "this might just be my masterpiece." I never thought Tarantino would top Pulp Fiction but he managed to accomplish the seemingly impossible. Inglourious Basterds is a stylish, disturbing, funny ride. Manages the tricky task of being extremely fast-paced combined with numerous scenes of agonizing tension buildups.

Mean Girls is all right. I watched it once and laughed a fair amount. No need to see it again.

21. Almost Famous (2000, Cameron Crowe)
Image

A superbly touching story of sex, drugs, rock 'n roll...and growing up. Superb performances, particularly Kate Hudson and Frances McDormand.

20. Die Hard (1988, John McTiernan)
Image

Staggeringly entertaining and, in my view, the best pure action movie. I like the series in general (although I'll try to pretend A Good Day to Die Hard doesn't exist) but this one is by far the best. Incredibly exciting and dynamic, with one of the most memorable action heroes pitted against one of the most memorable villains.

19. Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? (1966, Mike Nichols)
Image

An acid-tongued, caustic and bitter mind trip, Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? showcases Liz and Dick at their best. Highly unpleasant to watch in many ways because of its no holds barred approach but deeply satisfying.

18. The Departed (2006, Martin Scorsese)
Image

A new modern classic. Enthralling, extremely suspenseful and stunningly well produced from every aspect.

17. Pleasantville (1998, Gary Ross)
Image

Pleasantville is a highly original, ingenious "what if?" tale that starts out as a light comedy and ends up being about something much more profound. With stunning color and visual effect, Gary Ross made a wonderful parable about race, conformity and The American Dream.

16. To Kill a Mockingbird (1962, Robert Mulligan)
Image

To Kill a Mockingbird is my favorite book. The movie version doesn't disappoint. Inspiring and powerful.

15. Ferris Bueller's Day Off (1986, John Hughes)
Image

One of the most likable movies ever made, Ferris Bueller's Day Off is a comedy classic. I can practically quote the movie from memory.

More and more, I slightly regret cutting Almost Famous from my list at the last second. ;) It truly is a magical movie. It perfectly captures the glory of being a devoted, earnest, nerdy fan of rock music.

Oh, and I believe the question was posed a few pages ago, and I forgot to answer: I s'pose I prefer the longer version (Untitled) if only because it is the one I have watched more often. I saw the film in theatres, but have watched it many, many times on DVD and Blu-ray. And a certain indulgent, oversize quality suits the film. The cinematic equivalent of, say, George Harrison's All Things Must Pass.

14. Jerry Maguire (1996, Cameron Crowe)
Image

In many ways, I think Jerry Maguire is the best date movie out there. Crowe's writing is sensational and the cast is stupendous. Romance and sports have never collided so well.

13. The Graduate (1967, Mike Nichols)
Image

A true classic that lives up to everything that has been said about it in the last 46 years. Definitive.

12. Saving Private Ryan (1998, Steven Spielberg)
Image

The opening D-Day sequence is one of the most visceral, unforgettable sequences in film history. More than any other film I've seen, Saving Private Ryan shows the true horrors of war and the bravery of everyone who enters into combat. Not to be cliched, but the ending ("Have I been a good man?") can bring grown men to tears.

11. Singin' in the Rain (1952, Gene Kelly & Stanley Donen)
Image

What loving cinema is all about. Possibly the most fun, cheery movie I can think of. Wonderful music, wonderful dancing, wonderful story. Wonderful everything.

10. The Princess Bride (1987, Rob Reiner)
Image

A classic fairy tale with satirical humor. What more could you want, really? One of those movies so beloved that I think nearly everyone can agree on it.

Singin' in the Rain is a film where "I get it"--I understand why people have an enormous amount of admiration for Gene Kelly as an entertainer, I understand in an objective way why it endures as a well-known film--but I could honestly and easily go the rest of my life without ever watching it again.
