Source: Variety by: Omar Aviles

Maria Bello and Maggie Gyllenhaal have joined Oliver Stone's upcoming untitled 9/11 project. They will be playing the wives of Port Authority officers rescued from the World Trade Center. They join the previously announced Nicolas Cage and Michael Pena, who will be playing Sgt. John McLoughlin and Officer William J. Jimeno respectively. McLoughlin and Jimeno were among the few who not only risked their lives to rush into the burning WTC buildings but survived due to the efforts of other rescuers who pulled them out before their oxygen ran out. Filming is expected to begin in the fall in New York. I have to agree with Mike that it doesn't seem like the right time to be making a mainstream movie about this. I'm sure the matter will be treated with respect but people already struggle with daily reminders of this event so why make them practically re-live the entire experience so soon after it happened?

To Hollywood people it's never too early. After all, you have to strike while the iron is hot. Still cannot believe that anyone is letting Stone of all directors handle it after the 'Alexander' debacle.

Stone has made some quality films. And everybody has duds.

I'm more than willing to give this a chance until I see something tangible.

Someone who would be perfect for something like this would be like... Spike Lee (although he's already done his 9/11 tributes somewhat which is probably why I'm saying this).

If 9/11 movie is going to happen, I don't know who I'd rather see direct it.

Did people say this about Hotel Rwanda, Black Hawk Down... will they say it about Jarhead?

I for one want to see a 9/11 film. Don't forget that as far back as WWII producers were mining pro-Allies mainstream films out of the horror of WWII.

It will be interesting to see a 9/11 film from a 2006/2007 perspective vs. one that will be produced in 20 or so years time.
