This is mega huge news. They'll slot SW7 in July and own the summer.

SW7 could act like a TPM or more likely it could be more of a FOTR - big gross but the sequels will build on it.

I read that Disney had purchased marvel for 3.96 billion so the 4 billion figured seemed like a low value perception wise. I would think the star wars brand and lucasfilm elementsin TV, gaming and other merchandise would have been worth more.

Interesting point, but how did pixar cost them much more than Lucasfilm and Marvel?, I remember reading the purchase of pixar was about 7 billion

Huge news. My first reaction was, is it April 1st?

Never thought Lucas would step aside and give the reigns to his properties over to someone else. Maybe we'll get good Star Wars movies now, for a change. But Disney... i dunno, hope it won't be too neutered...

If i understand it correctly Disney now also owns ILM, Skywalker Sound etc.

The domestic grosses for the new Star Wars films will be massive...

Lets look at the past film with 3D prices in 2012...

TPM: 750 million
AOTC: 467 million
ROTS: 530 million

So You can tell the new films will pass 300-400 million no problem in North America.

Revenge of the Sith adjusted at 3D prices puts it right around Avengers level, doesn't it?

star wars 7 could be a fine movie and the first worthwhile sw film since episode 5 if they let the pixar guys do it. someone like brad bird could perhaps direct this thing.

I only see bad news. Releasing a Star Wars movie ever 2-3 years is not good. The reason that Star Wars is great and beloved is because of the built-up demand. Releasing one every 2-3 years will dilute al of that and it'll just come off as another franchise that has sold out.

Star Wars - 1977
Empire Strikes Back - 1980
Return of the Jedi - 1983

Phantom Menace - 1999
Attack of the Clones - 2002
Revenge of the Sith - 2005

16 year gap between originals and prequels. 10+ year gap between prequels and sequels. What's the problem?

I'm actually surprised this didn't happen sooner. Lucas has had the Indy ride at Disneyland and Star Tours at Disneyland and Disney World. He also worked on Captain EO and Alien Encounter which scared the living shit out of kids until it closed. He's been in the Disney family for over 20 years. Seems like a natural fit.

And I really like the idea of Disney producing the new Star Wars films. Lucas is retired, so if they can get people like Brad Bird, Andrew Stanton (John Carter be damned), etc. those have the potential to be pretty damn good.

So the first SW film will be rereleased in 3D in 2015 as well. Sounds smart. I wonder if they will work Hamill or Ford into the new series.

This series won't seem so special if they make more and more of them. Not that I care, because I don't like this franchise, just saying.

I see your point, but Bond is different because you can change up the main actor to keep it fresh, plus it doesn't follow on, and also people accept that Bond is going to do the same things and say the say things and drink the same things etc etc... with Star Wars, I can't see people being so tolerant. Star Wars needs the characters of the previous movies, and they will get older, and it'll just be shit.

The prequels pretty much proved Magnus' point.

The series will always be special to people because of the first three films. They could make twenty more films and that wouldn't change. Any film to have the name Star Wars attached to it (that isn't animated) will always be an event film.
