torrino wrote: I mean, there's a reason he was named director of Batman in the first place... Well, Marc Webb was given The Amazing Spider-Man and Sam Raimi was given the first Spider-Man. That doesn't mean (500) Days of Summer or Evil Dead would rank among the Top 10 favorite movies of general audiences. Besides, you pointed out yourself: "To be honest, I think more have seen Memento than T2 or, say, Reservoir Dogs among people our age." That is true. OUR AGE. We're not talking about people just our age here, though. |

I doubt that Mememto has been widely seen. Amoung GA, if a film comes on TV they do not go on IMDB to rate it... |

i think imdb is pretty universal these days. there's a reason amazon bought it. not saying common folk use it, but it's probably more reflective of 'generic american' tastes than you both give it credit for. |

Can we all just agree that The Searchers isn't John Ford's "searing critique of racism" or whatever nonsense Bogdanovich and Scorsese and the rest like to graft onto it. It's just racist. And not very good |

Here's a good article on the S&S poll from Jim Emerson at the Chicago Sun-Times: Greatest Films of All Time: Where's the funny? It's titular point is a great one - - the lack of comedies is tragic. Of course, the same can be said about the Academy Awards. And who can forget that we live in times so stern, even our superhero movies have to be grim slogs. The second point I liked in the article is summed up in the following quote: Quote: "I'm very glad that critics aren't simply glomming onto films and filmmakers because they are "new." Yes, we know these lists are kind of silly (what are the 50 Greatest Paintings of All Time?), and there are only so many slots available, but it's healthy to remember that a great movie remains a great movie, no matter when it was made. Still, I'm a little bit surprised not to see Robert Altman, Roman Polanski, Sam Peckinpah, Joel & Ethan Coen, Eric Rohmer, Wim Wenders, Steven Spielberg or Krzystof Kieslowski in the Top 50 -- or, among the established pantheon directors, Howard Hawks, Luis Buñuel, Max Ophuls, Ernst Lubitsch, Josef von Sternberg, Preston Sturges or American films by Fritz Lang, to name a few. Most of these directors have a number of masterpieces to their name, so maybe (as is often the case in these contests) the votes were split among too many titles." And finally, his brief overview of the evolution of the poll over time lends it a sweet perspective. |

You'd think they could have just picked Tokyo Story since it was at least 3rd last time and would still be a representation pick. I haven't seen Jeanne Dielmann but it sounds like it's just her in her house looking sad and cooking and doing dishes and stuff most of the movie. Parasite, Moonlight, Get Out and Portrait of a Lady on Fire as the movies after 2012 to make the list and In the Mood for Love and Mulholland Dr are the leaders for post 2000 overall. AFI did 100 years, 100 movies in 1998. Therefore if they're going to do a new list 2023 would be a good year to do it as top 125 movies for 125 years, or 25th anniversary of the original list. |
