14. Alien (Ridley Scott, 1979)

Image

All time great filmmaking clinic! Simple stakes, threat and the setting ratchet up the tension to 11. The best horror of all time...

13. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (Michel Gondry, 2004)

Image

Wonderful concept and one of the best romances ever. Emotional.

12. Love, Actually (2003, Richard Curtis)

Image

The ultimate romantic comedy. Love almost all the stories, can be both serious and funny. Will watch this almost every Christmas.

11. The Big Lebowski (1998, Joel and Ethan Coen)

Image

Easily one of the best comedies ever. Both one of the most quotable films and the plot is pretty damn good. The greatest Coens film.

Love Actually is great, but your other choices around it are awful.

Many fun movies on the list. I could see Borat, Superbad, 40-yr-old Virgin, Ferris Bueller and their likes in the top 10.

10. All About Eve (1950, Joseph L. Mankiewicz)

Image

To me this film is timeless. The human interaction and age, selfishness, need to be loved, etc. themes will always ring true and make the film feel shockingly modern. Bette Davis as Margo is my favorite performance of all time by either gender. Best film of its era.

9. Stardust Memories (1980, Woody Allen)

Image

An all time visual masterpiece for me, with a number of the most memorable shots and sequences and general beautiful cinematography creating memory on film. Fascinatingly, it feels like one of his most serious toned film, but at the same time has an underrated amount of jokes. I take it to mean, you can pull as much humor out of it as you want to, likewise for anger or romance. Definitely one of the highlights of Woody's career.

8. The Princess Bride (1987, Rob Reiner)

Image

The Princess Bride is a film where you can’t possibly beat it in its specific fantasy-adventure-humor-romance genre. Any other film of similar type, has to resign itself to 2nd at best because doing better is inconceivable. The perfect game has already been thrown. One of the most lovable and quotable films and a true classic.

7. Groundhog Day (1993, Harold Ramis)

Image

Not just one of the funniest and most likable films and Murray's greatest role, but has real layers too as a great existential odyssey. Losing yourself to days and people repeating themselves is relevant to all humans. Plus it’s an engaging personal growth/change film and romance. Add it all together and to me, it's legitimately one of the greatest films of all time.

6. Amadeus (1984, Milos Forman)

Image

A nearly perfect film. The storytelling moves with an energy worthy of its subjects, the setting truly comes to life - and its artist psychology and egos, genius vs mediocrity themes are awesome. Of course all time great acting anchors it as well. Right in the mix for best film of all time.

I've never understood the love for The Princess Bride. It's good, but Top 10 ever good? Geez.

Well, when I watched it about a year ago for the first time, I thought it was pleasant and 'okay', but certainly not even one of the Top 100 best comedies ever.

Charlotte Rampling in Stardust Memories may be the sexiest, most engimatic female presence in any Woody Allen film.

6, 7 and 8 are all amazing. I haven't seen 9 and 10 is solid.

Princess Bride and Heat have been the best performers in this thread by my count.

I enjoyed The Princess Bride when I watched it, but it would never even flirt with any of my best-of lists. I just regard it as a pleasant enough diversion.

5. Love and Death (1975, Woody Allen)

Image

May be funniest film of all time. Both aces in zany slapstick humor and a ringing script. Has a little more depth than it seems too, meaning of life, etc. Simply one of the most enjoyable film experiences ever.
