Post Rules of the Game
Ok, so I finallypurchased this DVD and am going to watch it asap. I can't wait. I hear so much about it and have noticed that many of you list it amongst your favorites. I've only seen one other Renoir film, A Day in the Country, which I loved but it was done sort of in relation to his father's paintings. I read his biography of Renoir as well, and I felt a similar relationship in there. Kind of soft, nostalgic, dreamy...I get a sense Rules is not the same. But I am eager to give it a try!

What did you guys think of it specifically, and Renoir in general?

I've only seen Grand Illusion, and I loved it. Maybe the best WWI film ever (Paths of Glory is also up there). Beautiful story, characters, camerawork, use of language, etc.

I tried watching Rules of the Game... and I couldn't get into it. Far too talky for my tastes. I'll watch it for real some time, but for now... blah.

Not encouraging! I had been under the impression everyone here liked it universally. I also want to see Grand Illusion, soon, too.

There's a lot going on here, especially if you don't speak French. There are often too many different things going on screen/to large of a separation between actions and words to get a sense of its greatness with your eyes glued to the subtitles. One thing that is evident from first viewing though is the film's influence: obviously, Altman starts here, and you can see a lot of the technique Welles used a couple of years later with Citizen Kane.

See, trixster, we love you, and that's why we think you don't need to be embarrassed about three year old dumbass posts like this one.

Wait a minute...

I saw this in film class at college. Gosford Park took alot of inspiration from this.
