This thread will seem ridiculous in a few months if they end up reopening the theaters. But, for the purpose of discussion, let's say that the cinemas stay closed for the rest of the year. Netflix probably has a bunch of stuff in the tank, but we know the academy shows a heavy bias against movies that go straight to streaming. Will that matter in the quarantine era?

I don't think Marty has even started Killers of the Flower Moon so there's no way that gets out on time. West Side Story and News of the World will surely be pushed since they presumably have higher budgets. Not sure what the other big contenders would have been. Maybe Spike Lee will finally get it? But again, that's listed for late 2020 and in our scenario they probably wouldn't have time to finish Da 5 Bloods.

If that happens, I can't imagine they'd have an Oscars for this year. And Birds of Prey would win :P

Never Rarely Sometimes Always and First Cow ftw? They have female directors so at least the Oscars can scratch that itch.

They will finally give BP to one of the many streaming services by then. Agree to Shack's point that we'll probably also see women getting those BD win

Elizabeth Moss, Margot Robbie and Anya Taylor Joy would actually be solid Actress noms.

As for actor... uh, Will Smith for Bad Boys? Lol

Omg Ewan McGregor in BOP should win all of the awards

They just wouldn't have the Oscars. Maybe NEON should have waited to release Portrait of a Lady on Fire this year (I mean technically they did but it had a qualifying run last year). It could have been nominated for so many awards and possibly won a few. Maybe even Picture.

I'm 100% sure the Oscars and every other award show goes on no matter what. TV Networks have lost enough money because of covid and award shows can be easily done without a live audience. There will still be over a hundred films released this year even in the doomsday scenario.

They should give it all the awards anyway because it's a joke that it didn't get any this year.

Yes having the awards would help the industry more at this point and might have added interest with some underdog movies getting in. Plus I'm sure by holiday season theaters will open up.

Could you imagine the noms if there's no other theatrical releases this year? Would studios just put movies in drive-ins to qualify? Would they change the criteria to include streaming/VOD?

It all depends on how many measures are relaxed by then. Even without an audience an award ceremony would take a lot of manpower and groups of people working together. If incase they decide to not relax safe-distancing and small group measures till end of year the criteria would be changed to include streaming and VOD but that would also depend on how many good streaming/VOD movies get released. Thus far studios don't seem to be open to release movies on VOD yet and I am not even talking about Disney which is not a big awards contender studio.

It will probably go to some Netflix movie. They would change the rules about theatrical releases in a heartbeat, I have no doubt about that.

Anya Taylor Joy is coming for that Lead Actress Oscar for Emma though, LOL.

Quote:
This season, and until further notice, films can qualify for the competition without screening for at least one week in a Los Angeles-area theater, the longstanding barrier for entry

Instead, films that were scheduled for theatrical release, that meet the other eligibility requirements and that are made available for Academy members to view on the organization's members-only streaming service, Academy Screening Room, within 60 days of being made available on a publicly available streamer or VOD service, will be in the running. (This covers any and all films that scrapped their theatrical release due to the coronavirus crisis in favor of another method of reaching consumers, such as Trolls World Tour.)

The board, meanwhile, will revert to its prior Oscar-eligibility requirements when it — in consultation with health experts — concludes that theatrical moviegoing is once again safe. (At that time, it will expand the number of cities in which a film can screen for a week to qualify, adding five more on top of L.A.: New York, San Francisco, Chicago, Miami and Atlanta.)

and changes to categories:

Quote:
For instance, the two sound Oscars — best sound editing and best sound mixing — have, following a period of study initiated and conducted by the governors of the sound branch, been consolidated into one, best sound (which will recognize both editors and mixers), bringing the number of Oscars that will be presented on the telecast from 24 to 23.

Additionally, to be eligible for the best original score Oscar, at least 60 percent of a film's music must be original, as opposed to "predominantly" original, the prior standard.

And finally, all Academy members — not just those who are able and willing to attend screenings at the organization's headquarters in Beverly Hills — will now be able to vote to help determine the best international feature Oscar shortlist, submissions for which will be made available for streaming via the Academy Screening Room. (However, it remains to be seen if members will be able to exercise this new privilege this season, since many countries have not yet been able to release any films due to the pandemic.)

A bit earlier than expected but it was going to happen. Oscars won't be cancelled.

Tempted to do a parody version of my forum description with just early 2020 releases, what films should I put on it other than Invisible Man and Birds of Prey?

Sonic the Hedgehog and Bad Boys for Life, obviously. If Jim Carrey doesn't get nominated for best supporting actor I'm gonna riot.

Da 5 Bloods got a release date in June. If that even has decent reviews it probably rockets to fronturunner status. Whether he deserves it or not, giving Spike one of the big awards will be good for legacy reasons.

Sonic may be in the running for best adaptation and actor as well.
