just increase the nomination list in the major categories to 10. Just like they did to The Best Picture category after TDK got fucked over.

Well the main reason they split up actor and actresses, is because they don't give enough good roles to actresses, so the actor would win almost every year. I guess by that logic there should be best female director.

this year aside (which is just one of the weakest best actress field maybe ever), the amount of good roles for actresses have been plenty over the last 10 years.

expand the field to ten, reveal runner-ups so there's extra merit rewards, and combine everything.

I guess there are several years in the last few decades where the Best Actress could have won over Best Actor. However Best Supporting Actor winners destroy the Best Supporting Actresses in my opinion.

In an ideal world there would be equal amounts of good roles for males and females so they would only need one Best Actor or Best Supporting Actor category, and one Best Director. But if they’re going to do it for the acting awards the same logic applies to the Directing. Frankly trying to win the Best Actress and Supporting Actress categories is responsible for half the good female roles so it’s possible that Best Female Director would lead to better opportunities as well

Wouldn't there need to be more female directors to fill the category? I feel like usually there wouldn't be enough directing jobs worth nominating.

You're close to getting the point.

I'd be all for the category, as long as they gave enough females good directing jobs.

Bingo, there you go! It's all about giving them more jobs. Like half of the Marvel films could've been directed by a computer, so why did they insist on hiring a bunch of bland dudes?

Captain Marvel had a female director and four of the comic book films this year have female directors.

As they should as the previous 20+ almost all had male directors.

There were 125 movies released wide by studios in 2019, 19 were directed by women. (4 in 2018, 9 in 2017).

3 of the 19 will pass $100 mil (1 in 2018, 2 in 2017)

The 19 films grossed $1.7 billion.

I demand that the best costume category be also split in male and female. Of the last 100 nominees only 15 were male. What an outrage!!!

Stuff like Charlie's Angels flopping (which was good!) gets stupid executives to think women shouldn't be hired to direct more movies. Here's hoping all the blockbusters this year directed by women do well.

this is regressive thinking. we should actually get rid of male/female acting awards, not push for more shit like it.

may as well add race categories while we're at it because all the female directors everyone mostly wants to talk about our white and that is going to piss off people for overlooking the contributions of black and asians and hispanic female directors.

Yeah that's the whole point I think.

I'm not against just more awards in general, but then, where does it stop.

Terrible ghettoizing idea.

The gender divide with the acting categories is there to maximize the number of acting awards and the Hollywood star machine by extension. They are the ones carrying the films and the public face of the industry so it makes sense to give them as much exposure as possible. Also because Hwood needs to ensure there are both male and female acting stars being developed/promoted to the masses as they can carry different types of films for different target audiences.

Director on the other hand is purely about achivement and a dick measuring contest within the industry. Beyond a select number of directors like Spielberg, Nolan, Shyamalan, the general public doesn't care about directors. It would be insulting to female directors to segregate them into their own category.

We can't flip out every time Greta Gerwig misses out, even when the movie is just OK and didn't deserve it in the first place. This way, Gerwig could be nominated every year, but also lose if the quality isn't high enough.

Olivia Wilde is the Best Female Director of 2019 in my opinion.

Well Gerwig didn't deserve it for Lady Bird but she did for Little Women.

There were so many worthy female directors in 2019. Gerwig, Jennifer Kent for The Nightingale, Olivia Wilde for Booksmart, Céline Sciamma for Portrait of a Lady on Fire. Eventually once women get more opportunity to direct hopefully we will see more nominated for Director. But I don't agree with splitting Director by gender. If it happens though it happens. I won't be outraged. It would at least allow for films like The Nightingale and Portrait of a Lady on Fire to get some attention.

I am totally fine with them expanding Best Director to 10 though.
