My issues with the Black Panther thing is they clearly didn't like the film that much or else they would have nominated it in categories like editing, screenplay, MBJ for supporting or something. Just giving it the Best Picture nomination screams that they felt obligated to so they wouldn't have to come off as racist/anti populist

Funny how Black Panther is the first Superheto movie to get nominated for best picture instead of the superior Dark Knight. Besides it’s cultural relevance, it did set up an interesting Afro-Future aesthetic that is the most revolutionary aspect of the film. Oh and the villain was very three dimensional. But other than that, as great as it is, it is the most overrated superhero movie of all time.

Well The Dark Knight had to be excluded. The Reader, Frost/Nixon, Milk and The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button were such momentous films that are constantly listed as the best of our generation.

The Reader really, really, really should not have been nominated and TDK (or Wall-E, which would have been more deserving tbh!) should have taken its spot. But The Reader was peak Oscar bait almost to the point of parody so of course they nominated it.

Finally watched First Man and I did find that film score to be pretty good and memorable in various sections of the film especially the moon landing itself.

The Oscars for cinematography, film editing, live action short and makeup and hairstyling will be given out during commercial breaks and then edited into a package to be aired later in the telecast.

Nobody cares about Live action Short or Make Up, but Film Editing and Cinematography are huge awards so I'm surprised at this announcement. The four that should be handed out in the breaks are:

Best Documentary – Feature
Best Documentary – Short Subject
Best Live Action Short Film
Best Animated Short Film

Yes - it's an absolute joke.

Cinematography and Editing are essential. Make-up can also be interesting as it awards a variety of films (dramas to period films to blockbusters).

Lol do they actually think this will help the ratings?

What a travesty. This makes me want to cancel the Oscar party I was going to host, I don't want to contribute to their ratings now (I guess my TV isn't measured by Nielsen so it doesn't matter but still).

And you can bet they're still going to have time for some boring ass segment about PWC, the Academy president giving a speech, inane musical segments with Hugh Jackman randomly appearing, and some montage featuring films from 1962 that no one cares about.

How can they be SO out of touch?

This is ridiculous, just have no songs if you want to save time, and how the fuck do you cut Editing and Cinematography but not cut Doc Short and Animated Short??? It's also been noticed that Disney didn't cut any of the tech categories with Black Panther or Mary Poppins in it

Post subject:  Re: 91st Oscar Nominations

It's ridiculous. Time constraints are irrelevant as the audience is going to tune in at the beginning, always drop in the middle and spike towards the end because they always hoard the big categories towards the end anyway.

My annoyance is that this is the highest, most valuable, coveted award in the film industry on the planet and they have to cheat these winners and nominees out of their measly 2 minutes of recognition to fake save time on a broadcast where time isn't an issue.

Cinematography really hurts.

The thing to cut has always been all the "Aren't movies just the greatest" montages. They take up like half an hour of airtime and are selling movies to an audience watching a movie awards ceremony.

And drop all the song performances. The same way that they don't show the whole movie when announcing a category and just a 10 seconds clip, they could do the same with the songs. There you have another 15-20 minutes saved.

They're supposedly only cutting the time walking to the stage. So they save like 5 minutes total. Lol

Off topic but I'm really impressed that Seth Rogen hasn't been Me Too'd yet.
