Cuaron's profuse praise had to get them their nominations.

“Roma”
Yalitza Aparicio, “Roma”
Marina de Tavira, “Roma”

I feel good about Roma winning Picture/ Director/

Solo is an Oscar nominated film. I love SW but that was lame.
What on earth is Cold War and where can I watch it?
I'm obviously going to watch Roma soon.

Ok... so the big surprises are no Bradley in director, the mom from Roma getting nominated for Supporting Actress (whaaaat), Timothee Chalamet missing Supporting Actor and Dafoe getting in.

Overall... eh. Nothing too big to complain about but I do think Bradley should've got in, and I'm bummed no Eighth Grade (and even though this probably wasn't gonna happen, no Toni Collette)

No Bradley Cooper for BD, No Ethan Hawke, lots of love for Roma, BK, Vice, Cold War and The Favourite. Too many nominations for Panther but good Infinity War beat it to the VE nomination.

Roma does not feel like a Best Picture winner to me. Nor does A Star is Born, Green Book or Bohemian Rhapsidy.

I have no idea what will win that.

Don't have a problem with Avengers, Ready Player One, and Solo for VE. But how did Aquaman not get in over Christopher Robin or First Man?

Aquaman didn't make the shortlist. It should've won tbh but *shrug*

With no clear front runner I wouldn't count out The Favourite. It's got Picture and Director, 3 acting norms, but also screenplay and editing, which are the most important prizes apart from the big ones. It would also be a thank you to Fox before being taken over by Disney.

BlacKkklansman also got a big boost.

Will not win in any category but..... Wakanda forever! Just glad it got nominated, Most surprising was the best picture nod especially with the decision to go with less than the max 10 noms they could have used.

Am I denying I predicted that originally? Why can I not take into account new evidence?

I still think it has a better chance at picture than Roma. I’d still be all in for it if it weren’t for the Globes loss.

I’d say Star for Picture, Roma for director, now. I think Gaga could also win considering Stallone/Rylance, Murphy/Arkin and other globes losers that won the Oscar.

It seems ridiculous to me that Black Panther was nominated for Best Picture, but doesn't get nominated for acting or directing. I don't recall that happened before and I don't get it.

It’s happened all the time since the Academy went to 5+ films at Best Picture. It’s why A Star is Born is looking very unlikely now to win Best Picture. The directing nom is crucial.

It’s looking like Roma for Picture and Cold War for Foreign. Or Roma could double up. Or The Favourite could sneak in.

Black Panther getting in is such a joke.

A mediocre movie propped up by Americans because 1) black 2) Marvel.

Seriously doesn't do anything new and its potential is squandered by a dumb story and cardboard villain.

I haven't seen it, but the trailer alone makes BlackKklansman more worthy if they really wanted a black diversity nod, so at least some semblance of quality still remains.

In fact I'd say that crediting Black Panther is a bit insulting really considering that there are other more nuanced and better movies made and starred with black talent. It feels like Hollywood/white mainstream using it as the "black friend" example.

Anyway, just wanted to say that.

Black Panther getting recognized is mainly for it's cultural significance and astounding box office.

Mau was the genius on Roma. Good going.

Roma doing so well is telling us folks watched it, loved it and it's again either 1 2 or 3 on folks ballots with those acting nods no one was expecting.

I love that BP was nominated for 7 Oscars. :D
I love that Spike Lee finally got a nomination for Best Director. :D About god damn time!
I love that The Favorite got all 3 actresses nominated :D
I love that they got the VFX nominations correctly :D
Only thing I’m upset is that Won’t You Be My Neighbor was ROBBED of a Best Docu nomination.

So I went back, and and also considered not being nominated for screenplay or cinematography and still getting BP and there's only one other film which also got a best pic nom and that was Selma.

I didn't see Selma, but really I don't see the point in giving these films best pic noms. It just feels undeserving...so yeah I agree with BK.

How did Cooper not get nominated for Director? Asinine. A Star is Born should win BP but now probably won't win anything outside of Song.

Or you look at it like it is, that genre prejudice kept it from being nominated in other categories that it deserved. It did get a SAG nom for best ensemble after all.

Green Book is definitely the "I can say the N word because I have black friends" movie this year.
