Well I guess this is their way of avoiding the awkward “Should Black Panther win Best Picture” situation.

Not sure how I feel about it. On one hand it means a lot more movies I like will be nominated for oscars. On the other hand those will be considered “less than” nominations, since they are saying films that people watch are not worthy of being judged along side those made for the oscar voters. The better way to do this would be awarding action choreography or stunt ensembles like the SAG do.

So I will vote nay .. for now.

So essentially it's an award for being the highest grossing film, which in that case a film would win by default, so I'd say no. There's no need to have any award that's not judged arbitrarily.

I took it to be the best film that's popular

It seems like the Oscars has an out if this idea doesn't isn't received well. They can just quietly announce a winner before the show or something. Or announce it during the show and instead of having the traditional nominee system, they just have some guy come out and say the winner and that's it. Either way if it's not treated like a real award, I think people won't be too bothered.

It gets weird if it's just like a real award with 5 nominees and presenters. What do they do in a year like 2016? Does La La Land win? Do they feel pressure to award something else that isn't a Best Picture frontrunner, or act like a film has to be even more popular than 150 mil and take Zootopia? (But even that already won a different Oscar) If they don't give it to the best film that's popular (La La Land), does it cheapen the whole awards show?

If Black Panther loses BP to a white film like First Man or Backseat but wins Best Popular, it's not going over well

Though, when Bland Panther wins this award, it will be funny seeing people think it is an Oscar winner while the rest of the world knows it just got a participation award.

Oh, that's very good news. Bland Panther can now miss out on a top prize like all the rest.
