The flag controversy will not affect it's awards chances since it's liberals voting on that. It's box office may be effected though in some way.

It's box office won't be effected.

I (also) think, if anything it would help its box office, because it gets the film more out there of what originally looks a bit like a la Silence boring bio-drama.

At this stage, it has helped put the film in the spotlight. It's the helpful nudge that any marketing team wants at the start of a campaign. A controversy that isn't really a controversy. Something that will be mocked on this week's satirical television shows and by next week will be forgotten.

Agreed that 'Asians' seems more of a Golden Globes Comedy/Musical type film than a serious Oscar contender. It would be kind of embarrassing if they nominated it for anything tbh. It's a very run of the mill rom com apart from the fact that it stars only Chinese people. There are some flat out awful, terribly acted and scripted scenes that seem amateurish, like the whole cheating subplot. And the way it endlessly glorifies the family's extreme wealth is kind of disturbing.

There actually is not one true Chinese person in the cast. Most are American and Malaysian.

First Man's biggest box office hurdle besides looking a bit boring is that it will be overshadowed by A Star Is Born which will be the movie of the moment. It could have opened quite a bit bigger with less competition.

From what I've read about the film, First Man is about astronaut Neil Armstrong and the first human trip to the moon. But some media outlets created a controversy about the American flag and wanted the film to be an ad for patriotism. Will this have tainted voters' perception of the film? The controversy will dog the film and the only discussion will be centered around whether the film is "American" or "un-American", or whether it serves someone's purpose of promoting patriotism.

First Man's release seems muted to me. After Chazelle went all out as a director for Whiplash and La La Land this looks like a more restrained effort. It can get nominations but its chances of winning either Picture or Actor are dead

Predicted winners

Picture - A Star Is Born
Director - Alfonso Cuaron (Roma)
Actor - Bradley Cooper (A Star Is Born)
Actress - Olivia Colman (The Favourite)
Supporting Actor - Mahershala Ali (Green Book)
Supporting Actress - Amy Adams (Vice)

Best Actress is very interesting. There's Lady Gaga, Glenn Close looking to finally win, but it seems like Colman has THE performance as the mad queen (Although it's possible The Favourite is one of those critics and hipster favorites that the AMPAs decide is too alienating)

Star Is Born should be the favorite for actor and actress now. The SAG is gonna love that shit. Cooper should also be the favorite for director but there is no way they give it to him over Spike Lee.

Even though he already has one, Roma's trailer just screams Best Director winner

Spike Lee? lol. I don't think he is a contender here. BlacKkKlansman isn't Oscar material. Unless they want to give him it as a legacy Oscar. I'd say there is no way they give it to Cooper because he's a newbie.

He’s a newbie, but it’s not like he’s fresh off the lot. He has learned from the best in the business and perhaps more importantly became friends with them.

I just feel he's too young, too inexperienced, and not the director's director that you kind of need to be in order to win Best Director. I haven't seen A Star is Born but I don't think he's doing anything remarkable in it from a directorial standpoint. But you do make a good point in that he's made a lot of friends in the Hollywood circle.

Yeah, if any film is going to win Best Original Song, it will be ASiB.

I'm not even really expecting Spike Lee to be nominated. But it's possible.

She's going the facial distortion route which served her well last time but I'd say Gaga is in the lead right now.

Hmm. I hope the academy turns their nose up at a pop singer.

The actress winner will likely be one of Lady Gaga, Olivia Colman or Glenn Close. Gaga can definitely lose as Colman in the Favourite seems like a very "big" scenery chewing performance playing the mad queen. Close is overdue of course but her performance is apparently very internal and subtle, which means she'll probably lose

Gaga, Colman, Close, Kidman. That means there is only one black spot available. Who will it be? Davis?
