Yep. Nailed it.

Tell me...

How many Mexicans have been nominated for Best Director?

How many African-Americans have been nominated for Best Director?

How many women have been nominated for Best Director?

Technically 3 Mexican directors, with 5 nominations (same as women). But 3 wins in the previous 4 years. A woman hadn't been nominated in 8 years.

5 nominations for African-Americans (same as women). 0 wins.

But as Emma is a woman, it would make sense she would point that out. If she was black, she most likely would've also mentioned Peele.

#OscarsSoWhite

Yes, thank you for pointing out one reason why her comment was tone deaf.

So yeah going forward, the presenter in the category they're presenting should point out the nominee(s) who are of color or have a vagina until it becomes the norm. Being equal and all. It'll be very progressive and not slow down the show at all!

:funny:

What's the point of the Internet without an argument? I think we're all on the same side here. We didn't call you a cuck after all.:D

I think we can all agree that her sentiment was well intentioned. I'm pretty sure she didn't mean to throw Del Toro and Peele under the bus. We just disagree on the existence of a bus.

Yeah. The cost is what was really slowing them down there.

Maybe if they had got the actual people it could've been funny in an Oscar funny way.

I don't disagree that Emma was well-intentioned. This is an important year for women. Greta Gerwig's nomination is huge. Could they have nominated Dee Rees and Patty Jenkins? Potentially. But I think the nominations were, more or less, solid.

Emma’s comment was dumb for sure, but it was one of many similar things going on. So I don’t think its fair to just pick on her. Like today I see a meme on facebook asking why the Parkland survivors aren’t talking about black America. It’s the SJW loop.

I think it's hard to argue that this year also saw only the 5th black Best Director nominee, as well as the 8th hispanic nominee (with three of those 8 nods being Inarritu). I don't argue anyone's right to fight for equality, but it's only two years ago where it was #OscarsSoWhite. Three of the five nominees were not white men. That's kind of a big step. You can't step on one progressive leap to get to another one.

It is a big step, but it is not equality. Certain races are now getting huge preferential treatment just to artificially present a united front that everything is A-OK in Hollywood. That is not progressive, but it is a leap. A leap back to 50s America, only this time it's black people with the edge. The very fact that people still have to mention "black" and "Mexican" just shows how much of an issue people still have with race. Until Jordan Peele becomes a great director (and not solely a great black director), Hollywood isn't even close to inclusion. Talent did not win Best Original Screenplay, race did. Talent did not get Kaluuya nominated for Best Actor, race did.

The problem isn't that women or minorities aren't being nominated enough, and doing so isn't the solution -- it's that they're not given the same opportunities by lack of involvement. No one wants the Oscars to become a show that recognizes, and celebrates, filmmakers based on their gender, color, sexuality, etc.. Rather, one should be recognized for their ability. It's a very simple, intelligible concept, but it's become a convoluted issue.

When everyone is approached and included in the process, it'll open many doors so that this debate about equality finally becomes a discussion of the past.

But, says who?

The only metric that is EVER used is to look at how many black people have won Oscars over the years. It is all about winning. Not involvement. They just want to win as much as the white people. It is not going to be representative of the country if that happens. White people make up 72% of the population, so when mostly white people win the awards, it kind of makes sense. Black people are still a minority (just 12% of the population). I'd say they win around 12% of the awards.

This year was a bit of a joke, in all honesty. Peele will always be seen as a people's choice winner, not a true Oscar winner like Denzel Washington or Halle Berry (who won theirs OUTRIGHT with no public outcry forcing the Oscar hand). And for my money, Peele even looked a bit embarrassed to win this year. Probably because he knows he didn't get it on merit alone. He did a good job, but not an Oscar worthy job.

Just saw Deakins' backstage interview. Seems like a laid-back 70s rocker type. Could easily fit into The Rolling Stones. I don't think he actually answered one of the questions! lol

I think all the winners of the films I've seen was deserved, did I wish some others might have won sure, but for example Peele has totally earned "Best Original Screenplay". Blade Runner's wins are the one's I most question, maybe they were good technical achievements, but it was a pretty boring film and I that makes them worth less for me.

Well, Deakins did not win on the quality of 2049 alone.
