Re: 2018 Oscar Chat
So The Shape of Water won 4 Oscars. Dunkirk won 3. Three Billboards, Blade Runner 2049, Coco, and Darkest Hour won 2. Get Out, Call Me By Your Name, Phantom Thread, and I, Tonya won just 1. 0 for Lady Bird.

Re: 2018 Oscar Chat
Kimmel's opening monologue was ok, but as Jmart said nothing memorable. In fact, it was too much with the diversity and movements stuff. I think 90% of what he said was affected by it all. It's like "ok Jim, can we get off this now and start actually having fun?" then the jet ski part came, which just made the show feel a bit tacky in all honesty.

Oh, who won the jet ski in the end? Was it Rockwell? I know he wanted it...

Re: 2018 Oscar Chat
Just remembered. Kimmel's joke about What Women Want was shit. Back then actually, Gibson was a heartthrob and women did want him. It was a dig but with no intelligence to it at all.
And I always wonder, how awkward will that be if Mel has to go on his show in the future. It's entirely possible. Gibson is pretty much accepted again, and Kimmel has many stars on his show. Depends on the comment, but maybe Mel will just refuse to go on his show.

Re: 2018 Oscar Chat
I actually enjoyed it for the most part. It was minimal on Trump jokes which was good. The monologue was bleh. I really can't stand looking at or hearing Kimmel anymore. I also found Streep in her red dress right in the center quite revolting. One other thing I was annoyed by were the endless dreamer nonsense. I also was disgusted by Emma Stone doing that diss to the other directors and singling out Greta. It does a disservice to her and other females when you obsess over her gender. Some other freak did that earlier in some awards show too and it was annoying then as well.
What I did like were the bit of the actors visiting that theatre interrupting A Wrinkle in Time. I loved Haddish and Rudolph. Great funny combo that I would like to see host something besides these ratty talk show hosts. The award winners were fairly standard. I was happy to see Blade Runner win a few awards. Dunkirk's two cheesy sound awards should have gone to Blade Runner I think. I don't think anyone's speech stood out to me. Oldman's was rambling. Mcdormand's was pompous and full ego. I was most surprised of course that the Shape of Water won best picture. I think that was justice and good reward for a film with 13 nods winning the PGA and DGA.
Final style comments - I loved all the velvet suits. Armie Hammer was amazing. Some guy who won something was in some blue velvet thing. Jennifer Garner was channeling her CMIYC persona which was nice. I also thought Jordan Peale had amazing glasses.

Re: 2018 Oscar Chat
For another year, I mostly skipped the show except for the first hour and then skipping to the wins. Jimmy gave the monologue that was expected of him. No one hires Jimmy to get something edgy. He's a funny guy who made some decent jokes, but like Ellen DeGeneres before him, you're not going to get anything unexpected. We're beyond the point right now of getting a Ricky Gervais type to host one of the big awards shows. No celebrity not embroiled in controversy can be made fun of at this point. It may change or it may get worse. But I expect lots of Colbert/Kimmel/Fallon/Corden/Ellen juggling all the awards shows for a while. Which means safe comedy.

Cuaron seems to have gone MIA after winning so hopefully the same thing won't happen to Del Toro.

Re: 2018 Oscar Chat
For a few staunch American liberals, perhaps. But the rest of the world still sees him (and all of you actually) as a great source of jokes.

He is still a joke and a source of jokes, in the minds of many in the world. But I think Americans are beginning to feel the jokes hit too close to home.

Yeah Trump jokes are easy, but since we elected him president the joke is always on us. Undermining the republican agenda as a whole is more important.

Re: 2018 Oscar Chat
We could have had-
The Social Network The Life of Pi Gravity Boyhood The Revenant La La Land Dunkirk/Get Out
Now that is a damn fine list of Best Picture winners, worthy of standing besides the mostly excellent picks of 00-09. And stupid late-game narrative changes sunk almost all of them.
I had nothing for 2011 though since they didn’t nominate either of the best movies of the year - Drive and Bridesmaids. But hey, Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close is an American Treasure dammit.

Re: 2018 Oscar Chat
I didn't see Emma's jab. Was it scripted, or did she just say it as bluntly as Natalie Portman?
I think it's hard to argue that this year also saw only the 5th black Best Director nominee, as well as the 8th hispanic nominee (with three of those 8 nods being Inarritu). I don't argue anyone's right to fight for equality, but it's only two years ago where it was #OscarsSoWhite. Three of the five nominees were not white men. That's kind of a big step. You can't step on one progressive leap to get to another one.

She would've had a point (unless the Oscars are supposed to be judged on merit...) if the other directors were middle aged and white. But what do I know? We've all been woke by Allison Ng.
