Actually i think weve hit the point where there will be riots if it isn’t nominated. I now think it will also get director, actor, supporting actor and maybe even multiple supporting actresses.

Dude, it will be forgotten by the time the Oscars are upon us. Look at Logan. In March, people were adamant it would get in. Come Oscar season, nobody has any energy to care because it is so long ago.

Celebrities are buying out theaters of Black Panther for underprivileged children. That is what will be remembered come award season. It’s already formed a terrific narrarative.

Yeah I don't see how this isn't at least top 3 frontrunner for next year's Oscars. The cultural impact, box office performance, likelihood to win the year, diverse cast and crew, and universally praised film with critics and audiences will make a play for first film since Silence of the Lambs to open pre-summer and win best picture.

I wonder if BP will affect this year’s awards. Knowing they might have to give it to a superhero picture the next year might shift people away from the fantasy and populist choices. Not saying it will happen, but the producers of Three Billboards sure hope it does.

It's not *just* BP's own quality up for consideration - it would effectively be a stand-in for Marvel's consistent quality with the MCU, and it would serve as a proxy for all the high quality superhero movies that have been snubbed in the past.

It didn't have the emotional pull of a lot superhero films, but the black factor makes it an automatic Hollywood darling, especially considering that it's a serious black movie with some dramatic pull yet not about street crime, slavery, or mid 20th century racism and civil rights. That aspect of black life has been drilled into us ad nauseum.

The awards are shedding mainstream relevance pretty fast (I personally haven't watched a broadcast in many years). They would surely welcome a good excuse for a blockbuster in the mix. This is Hollywood - they do presumably respond to losing money.

I think the odds are at least better than even we'll see it nominated.

I'd say this needs Infinity War to be good, not bad/great, to have a shot at a nomination. If IW is great, this will lose support. If IW is bad, it would severely tarnish a sharp track record.

But the visual effects were truly awful. No way it gets a nomination there. The rest (especially the biggies) depend on what the public thinks around Dec-Jan time. But still, I do not think it will get any nominations. Maybe one or two tech noms. But Picture? Director? please. By next year there will be tons of better films in contention. Proper films. Not blockbuster crud.

What the fuck does Nolan know about the Oscars, really?

It will be absolutely disgusting if Black Panther is nominated for Best Picture. Disney are putting their full weight behind campaigning for it. I am not sure if that means much. I mean, when was the last time a Disney film had Oscar buzz? Their marketing machine is great for the consumer side, but I believe the Academy are harder to sway. A bit more rational. So I still don't see Black Panther getting a Best Picture nomination. I could see it (and Mary Poppins Returns) both getting some minor tech nominations, though. And Blunt ain't getting in for Best Actress no matter how hard they campaign.

If I had to bet right now, I’d say it is a Spike/Black Panther split. And that Feige will pass the microphone to Ryan Coogler.
