Lots of people are saying "Boss Baby? Seriously? Boss Baby is now an Oscar-nominated film?"

Here are the Rotten Tomato scores of most of the major animated films last year, showing at least 5 that were better than "Boss Baby" and yet didn't get the nomination. (I mean, come on, Lego Batman was hilarious.)

Coco* (97%)
The Breadwinner* (93%)
Lego Batman (91%)
Captain Underpants (86%)
Loving Vincent* (83%)
Ferdinand* (70%)
Cars 3 (68%)
Despicable Me 3 (60%)
Lego Ninjago (54%)
The Boss Baby* (52%)
My Little Pony (46%)
The Star (44%)
Smurfs: Lost Village (37%)
Nut Job 2: Nutty By Nature (11%)
The Emoji Movie (9%)

The Boss Baby, while not Disney-great, is very underrated so I like the nomination. Lego Batman did get snubbed though.

Why the fuck is the academy snubbing the LEGO movies? It’s BS!!!

wasn't there some anime or random Zucchini movie released somewhere that's better than The Boss Baby??? rough year for animation (though Coco and Loving Vincent were both great)

Why are you bringing RT scores into it? The Oscars ain't a Critics Association.

The Boss Baby is at the very least very imaginative. But its execution is incredibly sloppy. Cars 3, Captain Underpants, Despicable Me, Lego Batman were all better, even if they weren't as original. I expect that's what got The Boss Baby extra points.

Jesus, I know. Films that have gotten terrible reviews in the past were nominated. But in the animation community, there's a lot of "Whaaaaa?" expressions now about "Boss Baby" being nominated.

Because you work for Pixar, sure.

It's an uninspired and undeserved nomination that got in due to exposure. The Academy certainly underwhelmed with their nominations here this year; it's probably the weakest batch of nominees in the category since... 2006, maybe even 2004.

Mary and the Witch's Flower
The LEGO Batman Movie
A Silent Voice
The Girl Without Hands
In This Corner of the World

Five great or excellent films that should have taken its spot (along with Ferdinand's spot).

Well Loving Vincent got the nom and should win and that's all that matters (didn't see Coco or
The Breadwinner though).

Fuck yes.

Despicable Me 3, Cars 3 and Lego Batman were probably looked at as cash-grab sequels, which I do not disagree. Captain Underpants is from Dreamworks Animation, the same studio producing The Boss Baby. The studio probably preferred TBB over CU due to its future commercial prospect and decided to push it in their campaign.

having seen all 5 nominees, here's how I would rank them:
1. The Breadwinner
2. Ferdinand
3. The Boss Baby
4. Loving Vincent
5. Coco

If judging purely by Art Direction, it was the most impressive in Loving Vincent though, followed by Coco.

Plus, no film called Captain Underpants would ever get nominated for an Oscar.

The Boss Baby is the worst nominee in the category since...I guess Shark Tale.
