The conservative wing of the Academy, which should not get underplayed, will get Nolan his nomination

There's really no way Nolan is missing a Director nomination.

I guess if Tyldum for Imitation Game which looked like a made for TV movie could get in it's hard to miss BD with a WWII film

I'm now worried Shack will be right. After Natalie Portman's snappy comment the academy might feel presured to nominate two female drectors. That's great news for Dee Rees, but bad for either Nolan or Martin. Nolan seems like the obvious man out right now.

Another thing to consider is that directing kids has an impressive track record of getting Best Director nominations as seen by Zeitlin and Abrahamson surprise nominations. So Sean Baker for The Florida Project is a sleeper to steal a Director nomination

She remains a strong contender. But yeah, given that "women" was the theme of the Globes, female voters might rally behind her. Other nominees will split the vote. Director is plurality voting, so no need for a majority to win.

Kaluuya got the loudest applause. I think his nod is set in stone or is that generally accepted already?

I guess Oldman will win the award due to his long body of work and I guess this performance.

3B has a male writer and director though. So technically that is mansplaining.

What exactly is that supposed to mean? You didn't say "racist" outright so I assume it's a separate but related category of moral crime.

Sorry, I'm not up to date with all the GoodThink Liberal terms du jour.

Best Picture : Lady Bird vs. Three Billboards

Best Director – GDT vs Nolan (Gerwig has a shot though)

Best Actor – Oldman

Best Actress – McDormand Vs Ronan (too close to call)

Best Supporting Actress – Shoot-out: Metcalf

Best Supporting Actor – Rockwell (he has the momentum now over Dafoe)

McDormand seems to be leading but I feel like they would love to give an Oscar to young hot Robbie at this point in her career

I saw a good point made that if Gerwig misses Best Director nomination, backlash leads it to Argo its way to BP

Won’t happen. She only missed the Globes nom because they were making a different political statement with Ridley Scott.

I've been seeing this on Twitter since shortly after the film released. A lot of people have taken issue with it.

I think the issue with the movie is bigger than the race problem. It makes light of the central characters (Dixon and Mildred)' horrible actions in order to make their redemptive moments possible. It is very manipulative. Have you seen it? Do you feel the same about the movie?

I don't doubt its chances at the Oscars. Voters love a movie with a big theme and some feel-good self-redemptive moments, middle of the road and not too edgy.

DGA tomorrow, Awardswatch posters seem to have Craig Gillespie for I, Tonya as the sleeper. A stylized film and he's been nominated by DGA for commercials four times and won once. Garth Davis last year also had a DGA nomination for commercials and I still don't understand how he got in for Lion
