I shouldn't get myself get worked up over this. I just lol at every other award show now. And Hollywood constantly overstating its own importance is pretty hilarious. But I remember that when I first got really into movies, the Best Picture winner list was like the Mount Rushmore of Film. The golden gods. And the ones I had seen backed that up (King, Gladiator, etc..) Now I know better, but the winners have always atleast felt sincere. Even though I personally, I see why the academy would relate to Birdman and forgive the things I dislike. If Moonlight had won that year, or last, I might even be totally cool with it. La La Land was a juggernaut though and destroyed the guilds. All of the biggest upsets, including Crash, had some precursors atleast. Anyways my point that this vote with my conscious bs taints an otherwise prestigious award and will accomplish nothing. I cynically joke about it, but Hollywood has had a significant impact on racial relations. A lot of barriers have been broken through both the big and small screens. Most importantly though, just seeing people different than yourself acting "normally" can only be an improvement on what one would imagine otherwise. I just felt tonight was an overreaction. And I'm not sure all the teenage flavads in 2038 are gonna understand or care. And I'm good now, got it all out. |
