Re: Which Nominees Haven't You Seen?
I'm seeing Fences and Moonlight this week, ten nominated shorts (animated and live-action) next week.
Will also try to watch 13th, Fire at Sea, Life as a Zucchini, Land of Mine and A Man Called Ove before the Oscars. Won't have a chance to see any of the others.

Because no black film can ever e good enough for the Oscars on its own merits, right?

But are you telling me it is a coincidence that loads of black films are nominated the year after an #OscarsSoWhite controversy? I know you're not that gullible. We know that controversy affects the fearful, hence why The Birth of a Nation has no noms yet GREAT reviews.

Hidden Figures, Fences and Moonlight would have had a great chance at being nominated most years. Algren is smoking something.

I do not entirely dispute your logic when it comes to Fences or Hidden Figures, but Moonlight would have always been nominated. Differentiate.

Re: Which Nominees Haven't You Seen?
Serious Denzel movies usually do well. Ruth Negga getting in over Amy Adams is the only oddity to me. Hidden Figures winning Best Picture would be the overreaction.

This years nominees (no matter how worthy) are tarnished by the shadow of doubt. (not saying they aren't worthy - haven't seen them)

The non-black films will still get nominated and none of them will be tarnished. That's the important thing. If the black community wants to kick up a fuss and have a tantrum every time they are not noticed, that's fine by me. They'll damage their own reputation even further.

It will spur change. Change we've already been seeing. That's how change works.

Forced change, not organic, which in hindsight people will view as unearned achievements.

It may NEVER change if you just wait for it to change. It would take generations. Normally, you have to force social change. Have you ever read literally any history book?

zwackerm wrote: Should we have a quota for black nominees? If the amount of work black actors got was at a severe disproportion to the nominations, yes. But I'd rather it not come to that. I'd rather black/POC actors got as many opportunities for Oscar worthy roles as white actors. Ditto with women.

Re: Which Nominees Haven't You Seen?
Sure thing! So when I get done with film school in x years, and get decent gigs in x squared years, this problem will be solved!
I mean, why change the people in hollywood now! Just have the next generation do it!
