Could any film pull a Room, Iwo Jima or Amour this year?
These three received no WGA/PGA/DGA/SAG Ensemble nods, if I remember correctly, yet were nominated for Best Picture and Best Director at the Oscars.
Could any film repeat that this year? Because right now the race seems very set on La La Land, Manchester, Moonlight, Arrival, Lion, Hidden Figures, Hacksaw Ridge, Fences and Hell or High Water.
Could Nocturnal Animals surprise? Or Loving? Or Silence? Or Sully? Or even Elle?

I'm way out of touch with this year's films, but doesn't "Best Foreign Film" pretty much throw a wrench into Elle's chances. I don't see the Academy nominating it there and Best Picture.

It is out of the race for Best Foreign Film already. Besides, Amour has been nominated for both as has Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon.

Then it's got a shot. I'll say no, with it being in the #10-#13 slot.

Silence seems the most probable to me. It reminds me of Letters from Iwo Jima (or The Tree of Life) in an abstract way: a "difficult," divisive drama by a beloved director. There could be a silent, potent bloc within the Academy championing it despite its fairly anemic season so far.

Silence could maybe be a film who's guild underperformance was cause of weak screener visibility but caught up later. Then again, it's possible that even as of now nobody has seen it, so...
Loving possibly because of Oscars So White
Nocturnal Animals feels like a film that underperforms, not overperforms at Oscars so I'm not feeling it. Plus it would have been a good SAG nominee if it had strength
