The Big Short was the best film and should have won.

Of last year's BP nominees - I'd rank them:

1. The Big Short
2. The Revenant
3. Bridge of Spies
4. Fury Road
5. Spotlight

I should really see Room but dont think i can be bothered with The Martian.

Forget Room, watch The Martian.

Room was the best film of the bunch, but Spotlight was a deserving winner.

Spotlight is a good film; not many other films touch on the many aspects of journalism that the film does. It could be a more focused and memorable film if it would dig deeper on one or two of its themes (for example: more on how the authorities and the church use rival media to attempt to kill the story, how the dynamics of journalists' different views on the subject take the investigation in different directions). Also, some unnecessary sentimental moments do turn me off a little (such as that one journalist feeling to urge to run around the neighborhood to check out the pedophile priests' live place.).

Spotlight or The Revenant would have been the most deserving winners of the nominated crop. Mad Max and the Big Short in a tier below, both featuring some brilliant energy and vision but some noticeable flaws too. I have yet to see Room (want to) or Bridge of Spies (don't want to). The Martian was barely passable as popcorn entertainment and didn't deserve the nomination.

In place of Martian and Bridge of Spies we should've had Inside Out and Ex Machina.
