I propose:

Quote:
Once upon a time in Zootopia, Jackie and Miss Sloane are Finding Dory. She knows of the Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, so these 20th Century Women must Silence the Rogue One to maintain A United Kingdom and stop The Birth of a Nation. Ever forgetful, she wrote it in The Jungle Book and gave it to Moana, who is guarded by Gold Fences, her Loving pet, Kubo the Lion, and The BFG. Meanwhile, Nocturnal Animals, Sully and Billy Lynn, are awaiting the Arrival of The Founder, The Accountant, and The Girl on the Train from La La Land. They will Live by Night as Hidden Figures, Allied under the Moonlight, ready to Trek Beyond Hacksaw Ridge, through Hell or High Water, to where Rules Don't Apply in Manchester by the Sea, to meet Florence Foster Jenkins for the Darkest Hour.

Too many non Oscar factors in there. My list of films to use would look more like

La La Land
Moonlight
Jackie
Silence
Manchester by the Sea
Arrival
Sully
Fences
Loving
Hacksaw Ridge
Patriots Day
Rules Don't Apply
20th Century Women
Lion
Hell or High Water
Live by Night
Hidden Figures

IMO

Most of the films in Algren's description will either get at least one nomination or has a good chance to. And there is nothing wrong with it reflecting the year as a whole either.

See, the thing is, last year I stuck to a list of strictly Oscar fare, and then everybody's replies were "You should include this movie and that movie", so this year I widened it and lo and behold it's too many.

I think it's pretty good, maybe there's another film or two that could be included, but as long as we keep "Trek Beyond" I'm good.

Maybe just get rid of The Girl on the Train, The Accountant, The Darkest Hour (not a 2016 film), and add Patriots Day

Nah! It's crap like Moana or Fantastic Beasts that is not needed, otherwise it's almost perfect.

If The Darkest Hour is not a 2016 film, I apologise. I didn't initially add it until I saw Lecter's thread about. Didn't even occur to me that it might not be a 2016 film. So, just remove that from the end and it is fine.

I like it. At first i thought it had too many non-oscar type pics but so what. It flows nicely.

Now that the Oscar race seems much clearer, here is my take.

In Manchester by the Sea, a Lion, a Red Turtle and some Nocturnal Animals that Live by Night cross the Fences and break the Silence howling at the Moonlight by the Hacksaw Ridge. Meanwhile, Jackie, Florence Foster Jenkins, Miss Sloane and other 20th Century Women wait for the Arrival of Sully, who went to La La Land in search of some Loving from Certain Women.
But there he only met Moana, who was obsessed in Finding Dory, come Hell or High Water, but only found some Hidden Figures inside the Jungle Book.

That's pretty neat.

Post subject:  Re: Forum Description 2017

Feel free to adapt it. I prefer yours as it lists more movies, although some may be out of the Oscar race. This year it feels like all main nominations will only be awarded to a small handful of films.

Either one is fine. We just need something. The awards season begun a while ago and it's still last year's description!

Would you guys like to have stab at the 2018 description? We certainly need to change it. Not sure why it wasn't done last time.

Can we change it to F U Trump? That's all the voters will be thinking about.

Post subject:  Re: Forum Description 2017

This is probably the list to work with, but I am not sure a narrative made up of these titles works this year (I tried but failed). Perhaps some original content, such as a poem/joke about them would be better. There are many place name titles, plus lots of people's name titles, and there are three films this year called "Wonder-something". Perhaps our award-winning actor-comedian-editor-journalist-womanizer-raconteur-samurai-poet, Thegun, could come up with a monologue as if he were opening the Globes.

Battle of the Sexes
The Beauty to the Beast
Dunkirk
Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri
The Disaster Artist
Molly's Game
Blade Runner 2049
Wonderstruck
Mudbound
I, Tonya
Lady Bird
The Florida Project
Darkest Hour
Wonder Woman
The Killing of a Sacred Deer
mother!
Stronger
Victoria and Abdul
Roman J. Israel, Esq.
The Big Sick
Wonder Wheel
Logan
Detroit

I propose something more like this:

Quote:
So, award season is upon us again. Call Me By Your Name is receiving praise on the festival circuit, but is it a shoe-in for Best Picture? Is this Gary Oldman's year for his portrayal of Winston Churchill in Darkest Hour? Will Nolan's Dunkirk be the prestige war film this year or settle for technical nods? Can Emma Stone win Best Actress in consecutive years with Battle of the Sexes? Can Detroit play its race card to win a few trophies? And will uber-blockbuster Wonder Woman be remembered come Oscar night?

It's time to switch to a generic description that won't look so dated when future anthropologists use the WayBackMachine to study the ruins of the World of KJ.

Post subject:  Re: Forum Description 2018

If we keep on top of it, we don't need to use a generic one. Having said that, and if the admin want a low maintenance forum (and it seems like they do), then indeed it's not a bad idea to have a generic description.

Alternatively, you could just make me a moderator and all your problems would be over. I'll do all the little changes that are needed to keep this forum ticking over. And I'm on here more than any other member.

My proposal:

Oscars! Let us criticize this year the guy who we've been kissing (and in some cases, licking) ass for the last 20 years.
