Viola Davis, Fences
Naomie Harris, Moonlight
Michelle Williams, Manchester by the Sea

and... who else? Critics Choice has Janelle Monae, Nicole Kidman and Greta Gerwig but idk. Guess we'll see who Globes and what not choose.

This category feels especially weak this year other than Davis and Williams.

Current predix:

Viola Davis, Fences
Naomie Harris, Moonlight
Helen Mirren, Eye in the Sky
Octavia Spencer, Hidden Figures
Michelle Williams, Manchester by the Sea

Janelle Monae could get nominated instead of Spencer. Nicole Kidman and Greta Gerwig are certainly possible too although both of their movies seem weak.

Umm, Mirren is definitely lead in Eye in the Sky.

I haven't seen the movie, but is she campaining as lead though? Would not be the first time they demote the significance of the role in order to get a nomination/win.

I don't know, but she is THE lead in this film. There is not even a second lead there.

It does not matter really. There is no firm rule or guideline. Whatever category studio decides to champion she will be eligible in.

There is no such thing as eligibility in one category or another at the Oscars. The studio may decide to campaign her in whatever category, but it doesn't mean the Oscar voters will follow suit. Sure, it increases the probability, but there have been cases of actors campaigned in supporting that were still nominated in lead (Kate Winslet in The Reader) or cases in which weird campaigning led to no nominations at all (that is how Nicholson and DiCaprio most likely missed for The Departed).

As far as I know, she is being campaigned in supporting.

After Alicia Vikander and Rooney Mara were both nominated in supporting last year for clear lead performances, I think we can throw your argument out the window. Mirren can at least point to Eye in the Sky being an ensemble film.

The difference is that Mara and Vikander both actually had a lead alongside them (Redmayne and Blanchett). Mirren doesn't really.

But, yes, I now found the THR article that says that Bleecker Street is campaigning the entire cast as supporting. Ridiculous, really.

Eh, I feel everyone is supporting in Eye in the Sky. Similar to Syriana or Traffic.

Haven't seen any of those yet, but right now I wish at least one of the following would get in to mix things up a bit.

Sofia Boutella, Star Trek Beyond
Gal Gadot, Criminal
Haley Bennett, The Girl on the Train
Teresa Palmer, Hacksaw Ridge

Wut?

This is the biggest lock of the acting categories. Viola is taking it in a cakewalk. Her biggest competition is Michelle Williams and it's not much of a threat.

The last two nominations slots (after Davis, Williams and Harris) are really wide open, though

it's *best* supporting actress, not one you would most like to fuck.

I'm not sure I agree. I feel like Octavia Spencer and Nicole Kidman are pretty solid, unless Hidden Figures really catches fire and gets double noms or Greta Gerwig somehow coattails off Annette Bening (who I don't think will be nominated in Actress anyway).

Kidman's nominations for some reason remind me of Angelina Jolie's for A Mighty Heart...

Kidman (who plays zwackerm's mom) is basically a lock. She has a Oscar clip scene etc. and there is no competition after the top 5

Davis, Kidman, Harris, Spencer and Williams seems set as the lineup.
