It seems weird to say it so early, but Stone, Adams, and Portman seem like locks at this point. The remaining 2 spots will be interesting. Never count out Jennifer Lawrence. |

Anya Taylor Joy should be in the race. The Witch should be a BP contender. Arrghhh Hollywood and its politics make me so mad. It's about time they start taking horror seriously! Not even when a groundbreaking, artistic, beautiful, masterful film comes along will they recognize it. Hope Hailee manages to get a surprise nomination for Edge of Seveteen. I love her. |

The Witch is fine, but it does not need to be in the Oscar race. |

I agree with xiayun: Amy Adams, Arrival Annette Bening, 20th Century Women Isabelle Huppert, Elle Natalie Portman, Jackie Emma Stone, La La Land Poor Adams and Bening will have to sit this one out again, because this will be Portman vs. Stone. |

The Girl on the Train is definitely being underrated and Blunt simply had the best performance I've seen thus far this year. Have yet to see any of the films on xiayun's list though. |

I get the feeling Emily Blunt crosses too far over into action-thriller actress, and not enough into Oscar-type actress. She'll need a few more prestige films under her belt before she is considered for Best Actress. |

It's too bad the film isn't better because Blunt really was incredible. |

Portman certainly has momentum. Jackie has a heap of buzz. Would not be surprised at a second Oscar for her. |

I just saw Jackie and Natalie will not be winning this. The movie is not mainstream and overall leaves you very cold. It's got a standoffish quality to it. |

She is good but the movie itself is just very distant. That might have been what they were going for but I felt nothing coming out of it. This quote from the Slate review encapsulates exactly how I feel. http://www.slate.com/articles/arts/movi ... iewed.html Quote: Through two viewings of Jackie, I was never able to pin down whether it was Portman’s performance or Larraín’s way of framing it that left me emotionally shut out. The experiences we see Jackie undergo—informing her two small children of their father’s death, organizing her husband’s televised public funeral, consulting with a Catholic priest (John Hurt) about the seeming indifference or cruelty of God—are wrenching, but I didn’t feel the least bit wrenched. For all its disorienting intensity, emphasized by Mica Levi’s keening and discordant score, Jackie operates at a chilly remove from the viewer. |

Jackie is getting that "cold and clinical" criticism a fair bit. It kind of reminds me of the reception to Foxcatcher a couple of years ago. That still got major Oscar noms, though. Portman is definitely in the hunt, but I feel like she's losing buzz for an actual win. To win a second one such a short time later, she'd either have to be undeniable or have majorly weak competition. |

There's just no contest between her performance and Emma. They're polar opposites. Emma is completely charismatic, has a "big" scene, makes the audience fall in love with her, she checks all the right boxes. Plus she's been hustling harder for this than any actor in Hollywood right now, even though Natalie's been doing her fair share and her performance is technically quite good. |

Stones always charismatic, and Jackie is an utter icon. If this is more MY WEEK WITH MARILYN than LICOLN, yuge failure no doubt |

What's helping Portman is that it appears she is the single strongest thing about Jackie, whereas La La Land has lots going for it, so voters may favour Portman. And I don't believe her win for Black Swan was too recent to be awarded another. It was 2011, which is six years ago. Meryl Streep had three years in-between her wins in 1979 and 1982. Day-Lewis had five years for There Will Be Blood and Lincoln. And Hanks won in consecutive years. Six years is plenty. The biggest issue for me for her not winning is that she hasn't been included in either of the National Board of Review's winners and the New York Film Critics Circle Winners, which is just odd. But then, these are critics. Perhaps people in the business will value her performance more. |

The thing is that Emma Stone checks off so many of the boxes one might expect from a Best Actress winner. I guess we'll see, but I'm almost wondering if the overdue factor will propel Amy Adams into being her biggest challenger rather than Portman. |
