Don't think the reviews for Hacksaw indicate its up to snuff with other contenders.

Hidden Figures has big potential.

I'm sure its a great movie, but Manchester By the Sea has a very pompuos and douchey title. At least let me watch the movie before telling me you think you're better than me.

I also don't like how judgemental the poster for 21st Century Women. Its like "we know you're a white man and this movie will prove how awful you are".

Trailer for La La Land looks pretty bunk too. "You're progressive and classic at the same time!!" " Why thank you John Legend" "Noo its a bad thing!!!!!!!!!"

Just some thoughts on the state of the race. :D Go Zootopia! We gotta break through that glass ceiling!

Do you think the town it is named after has a very pompous and douchey name?

Not when it's placed before the word United.

But why does it have to be By The Sea? Might as well call it Manchester Above Ground or Manchester Under Sky.

Really looking forward to these.

You think Kidnap actually has potential to be great?

Either way it's not releasing this year anymore.

The trailer was good. I look forward to it. And I like Berry, and I've not seen her sexy ass in a while. Did not know about it being delayed.

The Silence trailer looks great. Looks to be a major contender.

So how is this line-up looking?

Fences
Silence
Manchester by the Sea
La La Land
Jackie
Moonlight
Sully
Hell or High Water

I kind of don't see Arrival making it. Not big enough to overcome the sci-fi bias.

Affleck's Live By Night is still a major question mark as is Hidden Figures.

Don't see Hell or High Water getting in - just a Best Actor nomination for Bridges. Or Moonlight - might go empty-handed and ignite an #OscarsSoHomophobic backlash. And I sure as hell hope Sully doesn't get in, though you made a good point on the previous page for its inclusion. I'm going with:

Fences
Silence
Manchester by the Sea
La La Land
Jackie
The Founder
Sully
Hidden Figures

Two for the blacks to over-vote for, and the rest are proper Oscar films that could likely, and deserve to, win. I'd love Live By Night to get featured but I don't think it will now that Affleck is Batman. He kind of lost some of the prestige that he did so well to build up in the face of crap like Daredevil and his comedy past. The narrative was "he has grown into a real filmmaker", but he cannot use that anymore because he is now part of the DCU. Still, I hope it's a decent film. It sure looks like it.

Nobody's seen Passengers yet, I wouldn't rule it out.

The only films I'd be sure about at this point are La La Land, Manchester By The Sea, and Fences. Sully should not be nominated ahead of Arrival.

Yeah, Passengers isn't touching any awards other than some techs, maybe. At this point I think we should just hope it's solid popcorn fun.

It could still make some noise. Sci-fi is usually frowned upon, but they do love JLaw and melodrama.

No one really expected The Martian to become an Oscar player either before the reviews came in, so...

Based on the trailer, The Passengers is not a serious player for any big categories. It reads as a lesser sci-fi popcorn flick.

It's a popcorn film. End of. For fuck's sake, must we dissect everything to try and find an angle? It ain't getting near any awards. I mean, it is directed by the guy that has awards for ALL of his films, but this one has fucking Chris Pratt in it! Bye bye awards. :funny:

So there is room for a populist film. And the voters will have to decide before the internet dissects everything wrong with it. Obviously I'm hoping Zootopia will be that populist film though. :shades:

Depending on box office, could be Hidden Figures or Patriots Day. Or Sully.

Maybe it gets in because Inside Out didn't? The academy double rewards all the time, just ask Alicia Vikander. That's also the reason Arrival should be a lock to get in.
