Birdman was good but yeah that was probably the weirdest left turn of last 10 years of following this, I blame it on actors voting for a movie about actors

Birdman was a masterpiece of cinema about the ego of man. Boyhood was good, but so vanilla beyond its concept. Honestly I have no desire to see that movie again. Birdman, I'm sorry, is a film I still watch over and over again. Sorry Magnus, but I cannot agree with you on this one.

I've been beating this drum since it happened. Birdman is the Crash of the 2010s. Boyhood definitely got sunk by frontrunner status and the "best film ever" hype though. Birdman wasn't responsible for that, just like Crash wasn't at fault for the academy still being uncomfortable about homosexuality in a non-musical.

But they sure did show them comic book movies who's boss.

Although I have not rewatched either film I did think Boyhood was the more abortions and interesting film. Linklater was definitely denied immortality.

Although I enjoyed the film a lot more, Spotlight is also unworthy. Nobody will care about it by this time next year.

Fine with either, did prefer Boyhood, but really either John Wick, Edge of Tomorrow, Whiplash should have won. They could also have given it to Gone Girl and it would have been fine.

No shit, Magnus.

While I do agree, however, I do have to give the Academy some credit for picking something as nutty as Birdman for Best Picture, especially considering that it's by far the lightest film from a director who is (in)famous for making near-unrelentingly bleak dramas.

Birdman has been on heavy rotation on HBO lately, can't watch more than 10-15 minutes of it. I do give the AMPAS credit for awarding such a weird film, though with The Revenant in the race this year there might be a bit of buyers remorse.

Yeah if only Inarritu won this year for Revanent instead of last year. Boyhood should have taken it.

Though I have always liked Inarritu films going back to AP and 21 Grams.

While I do think Birdman was really overrated, I thought Boyhood was boring. I would probably had voted for Imitation Game or Selma.

lol.

Uh no. One of the easiest no brainer wins of the last 20 years.

Boyhood was a great idea though

So with mixed results, this thread is not a fail, but certainly reveals Birdman as one of the better BP wins of the 2010s.

I would never watch either again, but I remember Boyhood better than Birdman. Birdman was mediocre until the awesome ending.

That means nothing. Birdman is clearly better than TKS or Artist or Argo. Many movies are.

But it is true

What is there to question? A movie that lionizes the impact Hollywood has on the world. A bunch of over the hill producers are portrayed as heroes. I am sure many of the voters identified with Alan Arkin's character. I don't think you can go wrong with Academy voters by playing to their vanity and over inflated sense of worth and importance.

Boyhood will age better than Birdman. However, I don't think Birdman will be a hopeless relic. The devices for escapism may change but self loathing and unbridled anxiety of an artist at work will always be relevant. All About Eve hasn't aged too badly.

I think it will be similar to Rocky and Network. Many were shocked and upset that Rocky won, Network was clearly the superior film to many. A form of rationalization formed that both would age badly, so it didn't really matter. However, Rocky might be the best film in the sports genre ever made, and Network might be as relevant today as it was when made.

People will watch Boyhood five, ten, or 20 years down the road. They will no longer be the person that watched it the first time. They will be the young father, the older father, the struggling mother, the established mother. It will grow and expand. Original "failings" will be minimized, dismissed, and finally forgotten. I watched Almost Famous and Dazed and Confused when they opened and was underwhelmed to put it lightly. They are amazing films now. They capture those points in the 70s almost perfectly, but they also capture the timelessness of young adulthood. The generic Everyman plot of boyhood will be much more identifiable to future generations than if the characters were more special or profound. What many find pedestrian now will not seem that way when their lives turn out more like Ethan Hawke's character or Patrica Arquette's than they ever could imagine now.

Yeah, I remember feeling personally trolled by this particular awards season.

It was impressive to see someone pull a 2x in Best Director for the first time since the 60's, though.
