La La Land 5 for 5 in perfect scores thus far, and Kris Tapley makes it sound like the film to beat for Best Picture: http://variety.com/2016/film/in-content ... 201848405/

wowza.

9.2 average at RT now with 9 reviews and 91 at MC. Wow.

Yea this is now Best Picture frontrunner. A musical about an actress is AMPAs catnip.

Reviews for Sully are solid, but I am not sure they are passionate enough for it to endure through the chaos of awards season. Might end up a rough equivalent to Black Mass last year.

Moonlight seems to be receiving considerable praise after its debut at Telluride as well. Seems likely to capitalize on the buzz Birth of a Nation has lost with the negative press coverage.

MOONLIGHT is *MAGNIFICENT.* a specific but utterly symphonic portrait of masculinity in the modern world. every shot is seared into my brain

MOONLIGHT is also a devastatingly beautiful love story. to put in the most reductive terms possible, think CAROL by way of Frank Ocean.

Also: Both of Amy Adams' movies (Arrival and Nocturnal Animals) are receiving early praise. She could be in the running for two different performances this year.

I think it is coming out in 2017 so therefore not eligible for this thread, but Happy End will surely be a force on the 2018 awards circuit.

Well that will ensure she wins neither.

Unless she's campaigned in supporting for Nocturnal Animals, which seems possible.

Jackie, with Natalie Portman, getting raves at Venice. Portman is back in the hunt for another nom.

It is such Oscar bait. I hope it loses traction.

Sully must be a contender now. The reviews are better than for American Sniper and this is Eastwood/Hanks. They have traction within the Academy.

Should be another Bridge of Spies, except with a better box office. A similar multiplier from the OW would push Sully to over $150m.

I wonder if Hanks will finally get another nod, after missing out for Captain Phillips and Bridge of Spies.

Fox Searchlight bought Jackie last night and has already set a December 9th release date. Based on reviews Natalie Portman seems like a lock for a nomination.

Best Actress is going to be super-competitive this year, and we still have Bening, Chastain, and Blunt as potential candidates.

Post subject:  Re: Contenders 2016

Jackie sounds like it is going to be a major contender in several categories, not just Actress. Portman is getting serious raves for it, though. Possibly even better reviews than she had for Black Swan.

Current predictions for Actress, FWIW:

Amy Adams, Arrival
Viola Davis, Fences
Isabelle Huppert, Elle
Natalie Portman, Jackie
Emma Stone, La La Land

Post subject:  Re: Contenders 2016

I'd replace Huppert with Negga, and think Adams is the next one to bump because her performance seems to be less showy than the others.
