The Oscar nominated shorts
I saw the Oscar nominated animated and live-action shorts this afternoon. Anyone else seen them? Live-action is a grim group. The lightest one still opens with an attempted suicide. Two are focused on children coming of age amidst social unease and violence (one is set in Afghanistan, the other on the coast of Somalia). Another almost unfolds as a capsule version of Amour, with an aging pianist moving in and out of the fog of dementia. Each is very strong, though. My favorite is either Asad, a social realist drama focused on a Somalian child's first solo fishing adventure, or Death of a Shadow, a gothic and melancholy period romantic fantasy with a visual vocabulary reminiscent of vintage Tim Burton. From best to "worst" (least greatest), in my opinion: 1. Death of a Shadow 2. Asad 3. Curfew 4. Henry 5. Buzkashi Boys The animated group (which also includes bonus shorts not nominated, including a 30-minute one featuring vocal contributions from Helena Bonham Carter and John Hurt) is a tad more uneven, but still satisfying. Interesting to note not one of the actual five nominees features a significant amount of dialogue. The group includes an elegant short by Disney's in-house animation studio and also an amusing dispatch from the world of the Simpsons, but my favorite is either Head over Heels, a British produced clay short which finds a novel science-fiction metaphor for a long-term relationship gone cold, or the hilarious and left-field Fresh Guacamole, a beyond psychedelic two-minute feat of visual invention which is almost out of place among longer, character and/or story focused fare, but is a serious delight. 1. Fresh Guacamole 2. Head over Heels 3. Paperman 4. Maggie Simpson in "The Longest Daycare" 5. Adam and Dog

Paperman will be winning, IMO.

Re: The Oscar nominated shorts
I am sure. It does not deserve to, though.

Re: The Oscar nominated shorts
Maybe you should say it more often.

Re: The Oscar nominated shorts
Also, I just watched your top 3...
Not sure how Fresh Guacamole got nominated. I mean, the animation is pretty good... but seriously?
1. Paperman
2. Head Over Heels
3. Fresh Guacamole
Not even a competition. Paperman is visually stunning, and has an incredibly magical story. It's magnificent.

Re: The Oscar nominated shorts
I saw all the animated short films as well. Here are my thoughts.
Adam and Dog - Very fascinating animation and interesting twist to a famous Bible story. This could be the one the Academy votes for in my opinion for 3 reasons: 1. It's the longest one of the bunch, and for 8 consecutive years, the longest film always wins. 2. No Dialogue, then again, all the short cartoons have no dialogue. And 3. Independently made ones tend to be the most popular with the academy, along with having a very unconventional plot. I mean, look at the Moon and the Son, the Danish Poet and Le Mansion Apetit Cubes. The academy tends to go that direction in this category now.
Fresh Guacamole - Clever concept, but too short.
Head Over Heels - The Potential Spoiler. Also has that quirky feel to it, not to mention a very heartfelt ending as well.
The Longest Daycare - Funny episode, but the academy often shuns big name cartoon in front of big films these days.
Paperman - I loved it. But like I said before, the academy often shuns these cartoons in front of big name films. Although it has the makings of a winner, no dialogue, quirky story, and black and white.
In my opinion, it is a three way race (between Adam and Dog, Head Over Heels, and Paperman). but based on the artwork and the fact that it has the longest running time, Adam and Dog may come up the winner.
