Quote:

The Motion Picture Academy's visual effects branch made an unprecedented statement in support of visual effects in animated films as it narrowed the contenders for the vfx Oscar to 15 films that will be considered for the January "bake-off."

Responding to passionate pitches from visual effects pros on CG-toons, the Acad included "Ratatouille" and "Beowulf" over such effects-heavy live-action pics as "Enchanted" and "Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer."

The entire list of 15, in alphabetical order, is: "Beowulf," "The Bourne Ultimatum," "Evan Almighty," "The Golden Compass," "Harry Potter And The Order Of The Phoenix," "I Am Legend," "Live Free Or Die Hard," "National Treasure: Book Of Secrets," "Pirates Of The Caribbean: At World's End," "Ratatouille," "Spider-Man 3," "Sunshine," "300," "Transformers," and "The Water Horse."

Besides Pixar, Sony Pictures Imageworks, the animation shop behind "Surf's Up" and "Beowulf," had been vocal in support of the vfx artists on those films.

The Academy instituted the short list this year so that its vfx branch could see all the contending films before selecting the seven that will compete in the bake-off. Three of those seven will receive nominations.

Here's how I would rank their chances:

  1. Transformers
  2. 300
  3. Beowulf
  4. Ratatouille
  5. I Am Legend
  6. Pirates Of The Caribbean: At World's End
  7. Spider-Man 3
  8. The Golden Compass
  9. National Treasure: Book Of Secrets
  10. The Bourne Ultimatum
  11. Live Free Or Die Hard
  12. Harry Potter And The Order Of The Phoenix
  13. Evan Almighty
  14. Sunshine
  15. The Water Horse

I think 2-4 are really close.

The final seven will probably be:

The Golden Compass
Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End
Spider-Man 3
300
Transformers
Beowulf
I Am Legend

Though a nom for Sunshine would rock!

You don't think all the Ratatouille love will translate into a top 7 showing, Dr. Lecter?

I think they might be biased against "normally animated" CGI flicks.

Can someone explain what about Ratatouille made it a VFX film and not an animated one? Aren't all of Pixar's movies animated, to the extent that they even dissed motion-capture effects in the credits of Ratatouille?

Yeah.... how are there visual effects in Rat? Unless you're counting the whole movie as VFX.

I think the final three will be Transformers, Pirates, and possibly I Am Legend.

I think TGC, AWE, 300, and SM3 will fight for the final two spots. 300 deserves the win, but I could easily see it not getting nominated. TGC will probably find a spot since WETA's an Oscar fave, not to mention fantasy film like this are the kind they always pick. AWE and SM3 might get in for sheer franchise power alone.
