Post Strange Oscar Suprises!
A flexible thread. Just, put something in here that seems absurd, but COULD happen.

I'll start with two.

1. Dustin Hoffman wins Best Supporting Actor for Meet the Fockers
2. Richard Linklater is nominated for Best Director for Before Sunset

Supporting Actors and Supporting Actresses are normally the ones that have surprise nominees, such as Ethan Hawke a few years ago and Shohreh Aghdashloo last year. For this year, I will say James Garner and Gena Rowlands for The Notebook.

It actually has a chance there, but it's going up against films that'll probably be ignored in BP: Sideways (right?), Finding Neverland, and The Motorcycle Diaries.

I'd like to see it win a-la Lost in Translation last year. :)

Which category of screenplay does Before Sunset belong? That would count as a surprise if it got nominated.

It's up for Best Adapted Screenplay, even though I don't understand why

Richard Linklater for Best Director

Kill Bill 2 for Best Original/Adapted Screenplay

l read somewhere that it is because its a sequel, so it's Adapted from the original...or maybe cuz the characters aren't original...or something

Uma Thurman for Best Actress. I'd really love it to happen, of all the women this year, I might even give her the win, but it's not going to pass.

Uma Thurman - Best Actress nom - that'd be the definite surprise and a very pleasant one at that.

The Sea Inside getting nominated for more than 5 oscars.

Also,

Tom Hanks getting a nomination for either The Ladykillers or The Terminal. He surpassed himself this year, giving his best performance ever in The Terminal and a very against-character performance in The Ladykillers.

I thought his performance in The Terminal was rather average (average for Hanks, to be exact). His performances in Philadelphia, Cast Away and Forrest Gump were far more outstanding.

Isn't Garden State an original screenplay?

Catalina Sandino Moreno and Javier Bardem winning best actor and actress (but flipped around, I would hope).

Jim Carrey being nominated for best actor.

David Carradine winning best supporting actor.

Kinsey wins best picture.

I think Carradine being even nominated for Best Supporting actor would be surprise enough ;)

BTW, at the moment, I am almost willing to bet that Bardem will win.

If it did happen, would it be the first time that both actor and actress winners came from foreign-language films?

That'd be cool.

I do think DAvid CArradine will be nominated :)

I doubt Kill Bill will be recognized by the Academy at all, but if it will, then Uma will much rather get a nom than David.

And yep, it'd be the first time that both came from Foreign language films and therefore, it won't happen, hehe.

IMO I think there is a high posibility that Carradine is nominated and Uma not, which is a damn shame. I really hope both of them get it though. :) (And both win in that matter)
