I think he meant critics-wise and in that sense, considering expectations, It did bomb quite a bit.

I have just sen Clooney's performance in Syriana.
It was good and better than Giamatti's in Cinderella Man (that ain't that hard anyway), but I am still predicting Giamatti's win.
Overall, though (and I think I am somewhat reflecting Raffi's sentiments as well), I think the entire category is really weak. Usually, the Best Sup. Actor category is one of the strongest, but this year...meh. I wouldn't have nominated either Clooney or Hurt or Giamatti. Dillon is the only one deserving in there. I haven't seen Gyllenhaal's performance yet, though.
