I think it's hard to argue that this year also saw only the 5th black Best Director nominee, as well as the 8th hispanic nominee (with three of those 8 nods being Inarritu). I don't argue anyone's right to fight for equality, but it's only two years ago where it was #OscarsSoWhite. Three of the five nominees were not white men. That's kind of a big step. You can't step on one progressive leap to get to another one.

It is a big step, but it is not equality. Certain races are now getting huge preferential treatment just to artificially present a united front that everything is A-OK in Hollywood. That is not progressive, but it is a leap. A leap back to 50s America, only this time it's black people with the edge. The very fact that people still have to mention "black" and "Mexican" just shows how much of an issue people still have with race. Until Jordan Peele becomes a great director (and not solely a great black director), Hollywood isn't even close to inclusion. Talent did not win Best Original Screenplay, race did. Talent did not get Kaluuya nominated for Best Actor, race did.

The problem isn't that women or minorities aren't being nominated enough, and doing so isn't the solution -- it's that they're not given the same opportunities by lack of involvement. No one wants the Oscars to become a show that recognizes, and celebrates, filmmakers based on their gender, color, sexuality, etc.. Rather, one should be recognized for their ability. It's a very simple, intelligible concept, but it's become a convoluted issue.

When everyone is approached and included in the process, it'll open many doors so that this debate about equality finally becomes a discussion of the past.

But, says who?

The only metric that is EVER used is to look at how many black people have won Oscars over the years. It is all about winning. Not involvement. They just want to win as much as the white people. It is not going to be representative of the country if that happens. White people make up 72% of the population, so when mostly white people win the awards, it kind of makes sense. Black people are still a minority (just 12% of the population). I'd say they win around 12% of the awards.

This year was a bit of a joke, in all honesty. Peele will always be seen as a people's choice winner, not a true Oscar winner like Denzel Washington or Halle Berry (who won theirs OUTRIGHT with no public outcry forcing the Oscar hand). And for my money, Peele even looked a bit embarrassed to win this year. Probably because he knows he didn't get it on merit alone. He did a good job, but not an Oscar worthy job.

Just saw Deakins' backstage interview. Seems like a laid-back 70s rocker type. Could easily fit into The Rolling Stones. I don't think he actually answered one of the questions! lol

I think all the winners of the films I've seen was deserved, did I wish some others might have won sure, but for example Peele has totally earned "Best Original Screenplay". Blade Runner's wins are the one's I most question, maybe they were good technical achievements, but it was a pretty boring film and I that makes them worth less for me.

Well, Deakins did not win on the quality of 2049 alone.

Emma's comment is more proof of why most actors should stick to lines other, more intelligent people have written for them.

As for Greta Gerwig and the topic of female directors, the answer is simple: a vastly lower number of women attempt to become film directors than men. Some genders prefer certain professions. It's the same reason why almost all elementary school teachers and human resources professionals are women.

The Oscars, and Hollywood as a whole, have always given a significant leg up to members of a particular ethnicity. But said group is certainly not interested in seeing its share of the opportunities given diminish to something resembling proportional representation. Most of them would have to abandon the industry altogether!

I liked parts and the essence of the speech Mcdormand gave in this regard. She said that there are women who can tell stories and they should be given opportunities but then went ahead and asked people to call them or come to their office. You don't need validation from others/men of your work. She was correct in saying that there is a potential that people don't recognize today but should soon start thinking. Addressing to the other gender in itself diminishes the whole meaning of that speech. It should have been about look out there is a talent pool among women and if you don't give them opportunities you are missing out something big.

It was funnier but so bad if that makes any sense.

The films nominated were mixed at best gen pop wise. It felt very non event with hollywood getting the chance again to spread the movement in a nonchalant way.

Just saying on population percentages alone, the amount of Mexican immigrants in the United States is a high percentage of the population and four of the last five directors to win have been Mexican. All is well. Don’t force things. Let them happen

That's a little too Conspiracy Theory (And to be fair Racist) for me. I think you'd have a better case if the films they directed weren't so heavily American.

Del Toro, Cuaron and Inarritu are hardly DREAMers though. They're all from upper crust Mexican elite families, like most big time Hollywood directors are from well-off American families. It's not really "diversity".

Yes, it's actually a catchy song performed magnificently.
