An American Pickle is a 2020 American comedy film directed by Brandon Trost (in his solo directorial debut) and written by Simon Rich, based on his 2013 short story "Sell Out". The film stars Seth Rogen as an Ashkenazi Jew in the 1920s who gets preserved in a vat of pickles and wakes up in modern-day New York City, and attempts to fit in with the assistance of his last remaining descendent (also played by Rogen). Sarah Snook and Jorma Taccone also star.
Originally intended to be released by Sony Pictures, the film's rights were sold to Warner Bros. in April 2020. It was digitally released in the United States on August 6, 2020, the first original film released by HBO Max, and theatrically in several overseas countries. The film received mixed reviews from critics, though Rogen's dual performance has been praised.

Seth Rogen's performances are quite good but the movie is dull and not very funny. This would have been a major flop if it was released theatrically as intended. C

I agree that Seth Rogen's dual performance is good but this movie has not much to offer other than the concept and the first few minutes where the older Rogen discovers the new world. The story is good but its not handled well.

I liked it, but its nothing special and going by how the HBO Max streaming service is apparently underperforming so far they will definitely need to come with some stronger original films if they want to compete with some of the bigger streaming services out there. Seth Rogen is good in it though, especially during the dramatic scenes, but this story felt like a mess IMO.
