Beautiful Boy
Quote: Beautiful Boy is a 2018 American biographical drama film directed by Felix Van Groeningen, in his English-language feature debut. The screenplay, written by Luke Davies and Van Groeningen, is based on the memoirs Beautiful Boy: A Father's Journey Through His Son's Addiction by David Sheff and Tweak: Growing Up on Methamphetamines by Nic Sheff. It stars Steve Carell, Timothée Chalamet, Maura Tierney, and Amy Ryan, and deals with the strained relationship between a father and his drug-addicted teenage son.
Beautiful Boy had its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 7, 2018, and was theatrically released in the United States on October 12, 2018, by Amazon Studios.

BEAUTIFUL BOY
I thought this was okay. It wasn't amazing or all that memorable to me actually. I thought Steve Carell gave the best overall performance. Chalamet was good as his son. I also like Grazer as the 12 yr old version in those scenes. Maura Tierney seemed like a waste throughout most of the film until her car chase. Amy Ryan was okay but it was nice to see her pop up half way. The film deals with his drug addiction and relapses but we never explore Why any of that was happening other than maybe his parent separating. In my mind I'm sitting there thinking the father is too trusting too lenient as the son continues to relapse and fail and towards the end when very emotional decisions get made the film was so close to getting me to cry but not quite. Overall, it was decent but not very memorable.

Re: Beautiful Boy
The acting is great across the board but I agree the film feels a bit emotionally hollow. The most effective scene is the moment at the meeting where the mother talks about her addict daughter. I thought the direction was kind of all over the place - the time jumps didn't work and the soundtrack was beyond over the top and obnoxious. Really great performances though so worth seeing for those. B

Re: Beautiful Boy
Yeah I can see how some would find this movie a bit emotionally hollow, especially towards the end, but man the performances from Carell and Chalamet are just excellent here. Its really the dynamic between those two that really carried this movie for me even if wives are a bit underused and the time jumps/flashbacks were sometimes awkwardly placed. How this film dealt with drug addiction felt pretty realistic to me, although I agree that they could have delved deeper into why it was all happening I still bought into the drama of it and emotionally I thought it was pretty effective at times.
