I knew from the second this movie opened I was going to really enjoy it and even though its a bit too long and lags in the middle once it got to the second half and especially that crazy fucking third act I was basically all in. I can't really say I have seen anything like it either because it's definitely not your typical, cult horror film. Yes it's period horror at its purest and Evans definitely doesn't shy away from the gore, but from the direction to the gorgeous cinematography and that awesome score you can tell he is quickly becoming a master craftsman in this genre. Its not like this guy had much else to prove either after The Raid films, but I honestly can't wait to see what he does next. Very strong performances across the board too.

This is a tough one for me to grade. The production is grand, it is perhaps the best looking movie I’ve seen since I got my 4K TV in the summer. And the score is really fantastic too. Eerie but also perfect for the setting. Kind of like a more modernized version of The Witch, which isn’t a bad way to describe the movie as a whole. The characters and mystery building over the first hour is also really intriguing. I was hooked and expected to come in here saying that Evans is just as good at thrillers as crazy action movies.

I started to check out when the supernatural elements started coming into the clear. However, the exciting final sequence actually makes this story turn worth it in the end, though I imagine they could have accomplished this without an actual living goddess of the island. What I can’t get over is how this randomly turns into a torture porn for about twenty minutes at the start of the third act. Hey lets forget the story we’ve set up so these people can make infuriatingly stupid decision that get themselves and others killed. The “purification” scene was wretched but I couldn’t help but feel he deserved it for his role in the girlfriend’s death and not being able to explain what actually happened to the people who were still good. “Hey I know we are in a tremendous amount of danger and are planning to escape this religious cult, but why don’t I just take a quick stroll around the camp la-dee-da whats the worst that can happen?” As said, it does come back around to being good after this section but god damn it makes the movie an unpleasant watch and I can’t even recommend it to my Raid fans because of that.

Well definitely not that lol. It was being all cavalier when he went to get the license plate for the boat. He was just skipping around making it oh so obvious what they were up to. Hey what could go wrong??
