A competent and diverting, if rather unspectacular action-suspense film. It pleasantly enters one ear and swiftly exits the other. Dwayne Johnson adeptly delivers his expected performance—the sincere, unimpeachable family man housed inside superhuman musculature—and the other players are fine: Danish actor Roland Møller has a certain wearily snide charisma as a discount Hans Gruber, and the film smartly gives Neve Campbell a few empowering and proactive moments as the imperiled wife of Johnson's hero. The pyrotechnics and stunts are crisply filmed and modestly engaging, though I wish the titular structure's geography was more coherently conveyed. As an environment, and arguably Johnson's co-star more than any actor, it never feels as gargantuan or lavish as it should. And the cuts to the Hong Kong populace watching the ordeal from below (their fearful gasps and jubilant shouts registering as heavy-handed, pandering signals to the audience) are irritating and superfluous.

The longest and most expensive commercial for duct tape ever made.

SKYSCRAPER

I was surprisingly entertained by this. I really didn't want to watch but it was a screening and I decided to go. It was so entertaining with all the cool stunt work and green screen visual effects going on in this film. That's the best part of course. The Rock does a good job and Neve Campbell also had her moments which was cool. I wasn't excited about the kids especially the daughter. She just phoned it in. Just eh. It was nice seeing the guy from the TDK back in action. He's ageless. The villains though were pretty cookie cutter and uninteresting for the most part. Probably the weakest part of the whole thing. A really badass villain could have elevated this to an A, I think.

Grade - B

This was alright, a decent entry in Johnson's filmography. The film is quite predictable and there's moments that it's quite dumb too, but I had an above average time with it. While I laughed at it a bit too, I feel it owns its ridiculousness, some stunts are a bit much, but it's fun enough seeing the character pull it off. I liked the Hong Kong setting too, and while I didn't found the villains really noteworthy, Neve Campbell is a highlight in the film as Johnson's wife. It's not an epic action film by any means, but my expectations weren't very high and it didn't disappoint. I think Marshall Thurber made the most out of the PG-13 rating by delivering some enjoyable thrills well matched to Johnson's charismatic presence.

Duct Tape would have been a much better name for the film because of that I thought, fitting more in line with the nature of the film.

And this, the towering building was cool, but I agree it didn't feel as they got everything out of it they could. The mirrored boards it presented as a gimmick in the sphere/ pearl was pretty meh.

Skyscraper

This is junk. Apart from the tension during the crane bridge sequence, which cunningly played on my basophobia, the entire film is just crap. I mean, who in the hell wants to see Dwayne Johnson as a cripple?

I expected to see more product placement. I do not understand the comments about duct tape. I started this expecting him to use it in every scene. But he only uses it a few times, and no more than McClane in Die Hard. The funniest part of the film is when the police use Baidu to search for 'Sirin'. It's one of the worst search engines in the world, even worse than Yahoo and Bing, yet it's made out here to be faster and smarter than Google.

I counted three duct tape use instances, but it was especially the third one that really homed it in as a cvs promo.

I got to agree with Algren on this one. I thought this was pretty terrible as well, but worst of all I was just bored while watching it. It could have been a bad film, but as long as it was entertaining I would have been at least a little forgiving towards it, but nope I can't even give the movie that. I mean outside of the Rock doing what he does best at playing a likable character who you somewhat care about and Neve Campbell still looking hot for her age I am honestly struggling to think of many other good things about this movie. The villains were shit, the action sequences aren't very exciting because the movie is super watered down and it's a whole bunch of bad Green screen and Blue screen CGI which I am getting so fucking tired of seeing in these blockbuster movies. I really wish studios would stop being so damn lazy and actually build some practical sets for once.

This was passable because of the stunts but the whole heist didn't make sense at all. There are no WOW moments which this movie required. The villains are poor and the police is basically just a script manipulation. The fire scenes were completely unbelievable and that finale was such a letdown. The middle act where Rock tries to get back was decent but otherwise this movie is the definition of mediocrity.

4/10
