Post Re: October
Shoojit Sircar has been an exceptional director and I have loved his films thus far but he has outdone himself with this "slice of life" movie "about a love story". Dan, played by mesmerizing Varun Dhawan, is a carefree hotel management intern with big temper. He also has bad attitude towards colleagues specially Shiuli (played by a wonderful Banita Sandhu in her first role) because he is mostly jealous of her being so good at work. Tragedy happens and Shiuli is fighting with a life-threatening injuries and this is where the movie shows a surprising transformation of Dan. Its not a love story because its unclear if Shuili really built those feelings for Dan. Dan though was clearly in love with Shiuli though why and how he builds those feelings are not because of Shuili's character but because of the circumstances involved in this situation. Gitanjali Rao in her debut as Prof. Viday Iyer, Shuili's aching mother is also a revelation here.

The movie is a slow burner but that's what you expect from this kind of movie and while its not about loss its about the agonizing process of loosing someone and how it impacts the lives of your family and loved ones. The picture is gorgeous to look at specially the brief scenes of Kullu, even the hotel scenes give the movie enough authenticity.

All the actors are great here specially Varun Dhawan who has definitely given an award winning performance here. The movie also works on how it feels real and has very simplistic approach in its execution while leaving its mark when you go back to the real world.

8/10.
