45 Years
We often say an actor gives a great performance, but here Tom Courtenay and especially Charlotte Rampling give truly captivating performances. Each line given, each glance, each sigh...they hold so much meaning. 45 Years is so real. Each day in this rich, mature drama stealthily adds layers of atmosphere and intrigue. Rampling's eyes tell the story. It is alluringly nostalgic and at the same time - dependent on the viewer - agonizingly hopeful and regretful.
A real thinker, supported by true class in all areas.

Nice. Sounds about what I expected which is good.

Re: 45 Years
This was indeed a brilliant film and Rampling was superb in it. Not always engaging but the film sets up a nice atmosphere for actors to shine.

Re: 45 Years
Something ripples the 45-year-long relationship of an old couple when news about a decades-old hiking accident that takes the life of the husband's former lover (whom he met before he knew his wife) comes in the form of a letter.
The letter revives and renews the husband's many memories of his former lover. He cannot shake the fondness of the memories and the important influences they have on his many life decisions. The wife is awakened by the realization of how deeply in love her husband was with his former lover. She cannot shake the thought of being her husband's second favorite. She seems saddened by that. This all happens on the eve of their 45th anniversary celebration.
The film's climax comes at the anniversary party. The husband's emotional speech sounds like a heartfelt love letter. Their wedding song "Smoke Gets in Your Eyes" plays when the couple dances. But all this glamorous smoke seems to awaken the wife more, because, deep in her heart, she knows that something has changed.
