Along With the Gods: The Two Worlds (신과함께-죄와 벌) is a gleefully elaborate mythology following Ja-Hong, a dead firefighter/paragon of virtue as he is guided through the trials of the seven hells by a reaper and two defence advocates. The 140 minute film is essentially divided up into seven 20 minute chapters for each of the 7 hells. Of course, there’s a major complication/revelation concerning his brother and mother overlaying all of that. And then an even more overarching reaper/god plot that is only hinted at here to tease the concluding second half of the film (Together With God: Sin and Punishment) being released this summer. Has there ever been a tearjerker (many audience members were sobbing) with such awesome fantasy action? It’s an emotional action thrill ride all wrapped inside of a delicious mystery. *A*

The sequel has been renamed (at least in English): Along with the Gods: The Last 49 Days (신과함께-인과 연).

Sadly, even though it's fun to see the old gang back in the saddle, it failed to meet the impossibly high expectations I had from Along with the Gods: The Two Worlds. I rate the sequel *B*

With the original film now up to #2 on the all-time Korean box office records, I now suspect the rumored sequels will be strictly cash-in material.
