An all-timer. This is the type of film we're still going to be talking about in 30 years.

Where are you on Denis Villeneuve's previous films? I really liked Prisoners and Sicario but haven't been in love with them. I think Arrival looks great and am hoping to love it.

Is this a film anyone could enjoy, or is it like Sicario where you have to be sophisticated?

Well I thought it was boring AF. But it got amazing reviews from everyone else, so I just assumed I'm not smart enough to comprehend its brilliance.

Are you ficking kidding, child? Sicario is a pure thrill. Not that it is a dumb film, but it works perfectly as a high tension thriller.

I haven't seen ENEMY, sort of hated PRISONERS, and liked SICARIO a bunch without loving it.

Let's just say it's closer to 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY than INDEPENDENCE DAY.

That's why your signature lists only meditative, pensive and introspective slow moving dramas. :P

It's true for a lot of young people. Hell even adults. If something isn't constantly going on they're on their phones.

Sicario is dumb. And just because it thinks its a mature movie doesn't mean it is. Have some faith zwacks.

This looks cool. Hopefully its more thanAmy Adams being raped by aliens for 95 minutes.

Fantastic and another winner from Denis Villeneuve after last year's stunning Sicario. It is definitely more cerebral sci-fi, evoking 2001 on more than one occassion, and I also saw shades of Christopher Nolan here as well. It's easily Villeneuve's most tender and heartfelt film and the big 'twist' at the end is beautiful and heartbreaking. It's gorgeous from a production standpoint and I'd be shocked if the cinematography, score and sound design don't receive awards nominations. The performances are stellar across the board but this is really Amy Adams's show and she is brilliant - delivering some of the year's most powerful work. I definitely feel like this movie is going to be a major conversation starter and will stay with audiences long after they leave the theater. It has all the makings of something that will be studied and analyzed for many years to come. It's excellent. A

Oh, yeah, this is great.

Though it has nothing to do with the film, I wish I had not known the short story prior to watching this, thus knowing the twist. This way, I just saw the film with completely different eyes from the beginning, anticipating the major heartbreak.

The only thing that tipped me off to it was...

Spoiler: show
Louise having a teenage daughter - not because it wouldn't make sense with Amy Adams's age but just because she comes off as much more youthful than that

Arrival is a drag. Which is a shame, because it contains a very cool concept. It's rare that mainstream movies take a shot at portraying a truly alien alien. The typical movie/TV alien is just an allegory for part of the human condition. However, the Arrival aliens are the real deal and they present a challenging idea about non-linear time. Unfortunately, the movie itself is a dour scattershot experience. It would have made a kickass half-hour twilight zone episode. *C*

Hyperbole alert. Try to keep your expectations down, even as I say.....

this was one of the best films I've seen in years.

I desperately want to see it again. (especially since the volume was VERY low in my theater, at least until I ran to inform a theater employee. Timing was perfect, basically right as Louise & Ian were about to see the aliens for the first time, the volume doubled)

A+. and I don't think I give out A+'s. Looking forward to discussing it more, but for now, whoa
